One may think that a seagull, a samana and a prisoner have nothing in common and are living completely contrasting lives, nonetheless, these characters have recurrent characteristics that are not easily spotted. In the novels, Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach, Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse, translated by Joachim Neugroschel and One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Alexander Solzhenitsyn, the reader is introduced to Jonathan, Siddhartha, and Ivan. Three different characters with three different stores. These three divergent characters share numerous characteristics that help them find success on their road of survival. Each character from these books are found to be independent in their own ways, persevere through their challenging journeys and stay open minded about many difficult and challenging situation they are in. Three very diverse character share the characteristic of being independent throughout each of their stories. Jonathan Livingston seagull shows this side of him when he leaves his two parents and all of the members of his flock that he has known for his whole life and escapes to a place where he spends the day by himself with no one to guide him.With regards to this, the novel reveals, “Jonathan Seagull spent the rest of his days alone, but he flew away out beyond the Far Cliffs.” (25) Surviving alone in the animal kingdom is not a simple task, but because he works so well independently, he helped himself survive the difficult experience he had
