By the end of the module, you should be able to: • Give examples of the investment and financing decisions that financial managers make, and explain the responsibilities of the CFO, treasurer, and controller; • Explain why maximizing market value is the logical financial goal for the corporation; • Interpret the information contained in the balance sheet, income statement, and statement of cash flows; • Understand some key measures of firm performance such as leverage, liquidity, efficiency, profitability, market value added and economic value added; • Use the net present value rule, pay back rule and the internal rate of return when analyzing an investment; • Identify the cash flows properly attributable to a proposed new project; • Use sensitivity, scenario, and break-even analyses to see how project profitability would be affected by an error in your forecasts; • Recognize the importance of managerial flexibility in capital budgeting; • Use the weighted-average cost of capital to value a business given forecasts of its future cash flows; • Construct a simple financial planning model and show how long-term financing policy affect short-term financing requirements.
