William Rice was a widower with no children and living in New York on Madison Avenue at the time of his death. He lived the life of a loner and seldom saw visitor. Patrick’s first indirect dealings with Rice was during litigation bought upon by Rice. It was against the executer to his former wife’s will, a man named Holt. Holt had employed Patrick to dig up evidence against Rice. To gain such evidence Patrick gained the confidence of Charles Jones after his visit to Rice’s apartment. He then tainted Jones against his employer and gained an agreement with Jones to provide such evidence.
