Conventional wisdom suggests that most people residing in the United States take their citizenship for granted. The vast majority of modern Americans were born in this country enjoying the benefits of nationality since birth. Citizens vote, use public services, travel with a United States passport, run for civic office, and serve their country without a second thought. Underlying this chain of circumstances is that most Americans owe this fortuitous fate to a single ancestor. Generations ago, this person, often unheralded, made the decision to leave all they knew behind and seek their treasure in the “New World.” With this as a backdrop, a teenage Joseph James Kuchar (1888 – 1954), at the turn of the 20th century, resolved to make his future

What if your best friend went on an adventure. They had everything they had ever wanted. They didn't tell you or their family where they were going or how long they would be gone. They just picked up and left. Would you respect their decision to not tell anyone their plans? Would you think that this was a good idea of theirs, or would you think that this was a stupid decision on their part? Well this is what Christopher McCandless did. In 1968 McCandless was born. He was born to a good, wealthy, and happy family. He had everything any child could ever wish for. He was smart, athletic, and had a good education. In June 1990 he completed collage. In July of 1990 Christopher McCandless left his family and almost all belongings, and didn't tell anyone where he was going, or how long he'd be gone. Three years later McCandless was found dead in a blue bus located in Alaska. He had died of starvation. He went off and, ¨lived his life.¨ McCandless went out and lived in the wild. While Christopher McCandless died peacefully, the question has arose on whether McCandless was a noble adventurer or an arrogant fool. The evidence from many stories and social media clearly states that McCandless was in fact an arrogant fool. Christopher McCandless was an arrogant fool because he was not prepared, he
Kevin Gates is an inspirational speaker and pushes people to push them self. “Love the people god gave you because he will need them back someday.” Is what he is saying in this quote is don't spend so much time on not liking people and just enjoy life and don't fight with others. “Don't lose your mind trying to wait for people to come to their senses.” In this quote Kevin is saying don't tear yourself down when people don't talk to you or contact you.
When you see yourself living out your dream, the thought of what you're most passionate about pulls you in. Passions in one's life change based on what had affected that person. Dreams are defined to change. However, the benefits of these thoughts is that they belong to you and only you. Not one person's opinions matter but your own. Chris McCandless simply was living out his own ideal life, the way he wanted; not to the idea of his parents, his friends or of society. McCandless wanted to escape society and civilization which he felt was tying him down, while also trying to discover himself. McCandless is not by any means a wacko. He was simply defying society and its ideal expectation it holds upon us as a whole.
In the late 19th, early 18th, century immigration became very prominent in America. Immigrants from around the world began to flood into America each one seeking something different, but it wasn’t always easy. Most immigrants faced many challenges, some negative and others positive. In fact, most immigrants fled to America for all the positive attributes it had to offer compared to the country they were previously living in.
The expectation for new opportunity in America was an aspiration held by all those willing to leave their native counties—seeking a land of promise. While the United States certainly provided a chance of these fortunes, these freedoms came at a steep price. The initial process of traveling abroad was grueling. Away from the comforts of home, precious belongings and a culture that felt familiar—adjusting to
1876 was a year to remember in the American culture. During this year at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia Pennsylvania, we as Americans were introduced to many wonders that we still use or come in contact with today. For example the telephone or the type writer, though the make and uses of these devices have changed, if it were not for the exposition who knows what we as Americans would be utilizing today. But not all items introduced at the exposition continued to be beneficial to the everyday American. Some items would later become more of a nuisance rather than a benefit to the country for the decades to follow. What item might you ask this would be? That item would be Kudzu. Kudzu is a fast growing vine from eastern Asia. This vine was introduced
It is not uncommon for one to grow up learning about the “heroes” from Europe who discovered the “New World”, known today as the United States of America. However, stories of these “brave heroes” often fail to depict the full story. Many of the new settlers came to America in search of a new and better life. As colonists continued to settle, the United States changed drastically. Two of the most dominant themes in colonial America until 1700 were freedom is not entirely free and the “New World” was new for everyone, not just Europeans and African Americans.
Citizenship can be defined as the position or status of being a citizen in a particular country (Oxford Dictionaries, 2016). This definition is not very broad, nor does it cover the many aspects of citizenship that exist in the 21st century. It is not only about being a legal citizen of a particular country, it is also about being a social citizen. You can be a citizen of Australia but choose to live elsewhere for the majority of your life. In terms of citizenship it is relevant on a political and social level. If you are actively contributing to the country in which you live in some ways you are fulfilling your duties as a citizen.
Become a citizen of one of the best nations in the world is a privilege that not many people have. I’m talking about the United States of America. If you are an U.S natural born citizen you have rights and responsibilities that protect you based on the Declaration of Independence and the U.S Constitution. People who are in the position to become U.S. citizens gain the same rights, privileges, and responsibilities of citizenship as natural born American with the only restriction that they can’t be eligible for President of the United States.

On the one hand, King’s speech holds a mostly formal manner throughout. King uses complex sentences and presents arguments in full by introducing, elaborating and concluding, one example from the commencement of his speech, Five score years ago...the Negro is still not free. (cf. App I line x-x). Having structured arguments is indicative of scripted speeches, these scripted speeches typically hold a formal manner throughout; however, this may intentionally deviate, as clear at the beginning of King’s speech when he opens with first person - I - and continues on to directly address the audience. Martin’s aim is the create a relationship with the audience in order to open them up to accepting his ideology, the speech may contain tones of formal text, but the informal aspect with help develop a relationship between participants. This would have been required during King’s speech as many audience members may not have agreed with his views and beliefs due to the high racism of the time.
America still believes in freedom and in being the land of opportunities even though time has changed some of America’s original ideals. Nowadays, becoming an American is not as simple as entering America and obtaining land. For example, there is the process of applying for citizenship, something that has now become a big part of defining an American. Hundreds of thousands of people per year apply for citizenship, yet not many people are granted the opportunity to become one. Anonymous shared their story online and said, “I never once thought immigration would affect me, until I realized that laws change and if you are just a resident here...you have no protection” (Defining American). Immigrants feel citizens have more rights than people who are just residents. An immigrant wanting to become a citizen must go through a variety of questions about the United States and what its founders had set as its ideals. Though, with patience, an immigrant can become an American within a
