The Cold War was a time filled with tension, which inevitably caused much conspiracy to form. The man who reigned as the conspiracy king was none other than Joseph McCarthy. McCarthy rose to power in November 5, 1946 after defeating Democrat Howard J. McCurry. Coming into the senate house, McCarthy’s rein truly started in 1949 when he attacked a news reporter due to his left-wing associations. Despite McCarthy’s patriotic belief, in the end, the power he attained led to his demise and weakening of his government.
February 9th, 1950 is the day that the belief of McCarthyism came to be known. “McCarthy delivers a speech in Wheeling, West Virginia and displays a list of 205 Communist in the State Department”( The Era of McCarthyism). Using his power as the senate and the rising threat of Communism, McCarthy uses this to help win his upcoming election and start one of the worst things ever, known as, a witch hunt. Although, having a small interest in anti-communist, using the threat helped McCarthy stay in the limelight as the patriotic American. McCarthy has become blinded by the power, and attention due to being quite popular with many pro-American people. However, that is what leads to McCarthy’s mistake for blaming the military of having communist affiliation. “McCarthy shifts anti-communist focus from the State Department to the Army and begins looking for espionage” (Army-McCarthy Hearings). Not knowing what trouble may be ahead, McCarthy starts questioning many military officers even though it was stated that there were no espionage. Due to his arbitrary actions, McCarthy was ousted and condemned on December 2, 1954.
