Josephine Esther Mentzer is a famous entrepreneur because of her wide spread success and starting from nothing. Estee, Josephine Esther, was born in Queens with Hungarian mother and Czech Father. Growing up Estee took much influence from her family. As the youngest of six children, two of which died before Estee was born, was a close knit Jewish family living in a mostly Italian neighborhood. From working in the family’s hardware store, Estee learned from a young age about retailing and business. Estee would recall her mother being the first beauty she ever recognized. Her mother would slather her skin in thick creams and tell her, “Hands are as telling as any written pedigree”. Her mother Rose always wore gloves and would carry a parasol …show more content…
Shortly after World War I began, Estee’s Hungarian uncle immigrated to America and lived with the family. Estee’s uncle, John Schotz experimented with chemistry and was a salesman for his face creams. As a teen, John’s creams were Estee’s first real breakthrough. John had set up a laboratory behind the Mentzer’s home where Ester would watch amazed at the products. Ester began creating her own creams and formulas and trying them out on her friends, family and any woman that would let her. Creme Pack, Cleansing Oil, AllPurpose Creme, and Skin Lotion were Estee’s first four products. When the owner of a salon in Manhattan asked her what she used to get her glowing complexion she gushed. Later Ester would chat and demonstrate her products on women waiting in the lobby, under the hair dryers and anyone who would listen. Her creams became a hit. Estee would always say the best forms of communication were “telephone, telegraph and tell a woman”. This showed true when Estee landed a order with Saks Fifth Avenue, they sold out in just a couple days. After the major success she expanded to more prestigious retailers such as Neiman Marcus, Marshall Field’s, Bonwit Teller and I. Magnin. Estee opened each store herself and also trained all the sales women who would be demonstrating her …show more content…
Her passion, perseverance, and resourcefulness gained her a spot among the great cosmetic retailers. Stated in Estee’s Biography, by Linda Peterson, “ When she was selling at beauty salons, she never lunched, for fear of missing a customer. When the family went on summer vacation, she'd make up the women relaxing poolside at resort hotels. In winter, she'd visit women's homes and give them beauty lessons while they played bridge.”. Estee’s drive and salesmanship formed at a young age and continued to grow as Estee Lauder did. In one attempt to sell her products to the first big retailer she was told no. Then after Estee accidentally dropped a bottle of her Youth Dew perfume on the floor, the smell spread throughout the store and customers were asking where to buy the product. The manager then withdrew his previous statement and ordered all of her stock. The store sold out in the next two days. Estee later created the “gift with purchase” sales technique that is now a staple for many cosmetic companies. With purchase of a certain amount or more, Estee would give away shavings of a lipstick or blush in wax paper. This was ingenious to Estee Lauder becauses often times the woman would come back and purchase them

Joy Brown is an internationally known artist. She was born in the United States but grew up in Japan with her medical missionary parents. Then she came back to America for college, graduated from Florida’s Eckerd College and later returned to Japan to learn the ways of pottery. She did an apprenticeship in traditional Japanese wood fire ceramics. Brown has worked with clay and wood firing for over 40 years. And for 18 years she has worked with bronze. She has exhibited in galleries and museums in the United States, Europe, and Asia. In 1998, she co-funded Still-Mountain Center; it’s a nonprofit arts organization that fosters East-West artistic exchange.
Josephine came from a talent family. Her mother was trying to be a dancer, and her father was a drummer. Unfortunately, her father left her shortly after her birth. The oldest of four, Josephine had got a job to help her family financially. She babysat and was cleaning houses for the white people. Everytime they left they would tell her,”be sure not to kiss the baby.” Back then that would have made her feel less of a person. Josephine got her first husband at 13, Willie Wells, but that did not last. Not long after that in 1919 she started touring with the Jones Family Band and the Dixie Steppers.
When the Founding Fathers brashly declared that all men are created equal in the United States Declaration of Independence, they conveniently forgot to include the word “women” in that statement. In my own pursuit of happiness I have been oppressed on a myriad of occasions due to my gender. As a female in the United States Army, I have been told by my male counterparts that I should be in the kitchen rather than in the field. I have been denied access to branches in the military that are said to be unfit for females to serve in, and I have watched as male soldiers rank up both faster and higher than female soldiers. Being a woman in today’s society means unequal pay, sexism, and overall general oppression.
With the ability to travel back in time, I would transport to Paris, 1965 and spend an evening speaking with Josephine Baker just after she had received her Croix de Guerre. Frieda Josephine McDonald, Josephine Baker, is popularly known as the “Bronze Venus” and the Diva of the Golden Age for her vaudeville beginnings, stellar show career, and famed “banana skirt” performances. She is revered for her Civil Rights activism as the first African American woman to integrate a major music hall and as the primary candidate to lead the American Civil Rights Movement after the assassination of Dr. King. However, sitting in a chair across from the Mrs. Josephine Baker, I would ask little of her awards and movies because I am inspired by Baker’s heart, by her mind, and by her soul. Josephine Baker possessed an open heart, an understanding heart, a passionate heart for the world and the people sharing this Earth. During the early 20th century, a time of rampant prejudice and racism, Josephine Baker was a woman who understood diversity. Instead of shunning them, Baker appreciated the differences that distinguished cultures and embraced

Esther Park is a Korean American woman who originally lived in South Korea with her parents. After her parents forbid her from living the lifestyle she wanted to live (being non-religious and vegan) she finished college and moved to the USA. While learning English in college she made a few english friends online that she could rent rooms from while she looked for a new start in America. As she stayed in a friend’s apartment for a few months in North Dakota, she worked in a grocery store (just to help pay rent while job and house hunting). At 22 she had already been put through college and had gotten an English Literature degree that she wanted to put to use. About a month before her 23rd birthday she found a lovely apartment in Minnesota and decided to move. She had a home and
Isabella d’Este, also known as “the first lady of the world,” was an influential person in the Renaissance period. She was married to Francisco Gonzaga and ruled the city-state of Mantua, in his absence. In her youth, her family ruled Ferrara, another Italian city-state, located on the Po River. At the age of sixteen she was married, and perfectly embodied the Renaissance ideal of an individual. This is true because she was universally educated and fulfilled her duties.
If I were to be someone else, or to be like someone else, I would choose to be Lydia Martin. Lydia Martin is one of the main female characters on a popular TV show, Teen Wolf. She is one of the few females in the show, and has to deal with ignorant boys a lot of the time. For this reason, I deeply relate to her, as most of my life is spent dealing with ignorant boys who I choose to spend my time with for whatever reason. She is a very strong character, with a very dominant presence in many people’s lives. It is that among many other reasons that I would wish to be like her, if I could.
Estee Lauder was originally named, Josephine Esther Mentzer, and is a native of New York. She is from of East European descent while her mother is from Hungary and her father is from Czechoslovakia. To the present date her birthdate was never actually known. She infamously said “You ask my age? I tell you it simply doesn’t matter.” According to EsteeLauder.com, Estee married Joseph Lauder in 1930 and began their life in Manhatan, New York, still the corporate headquarters of the company today. It was rumored that her wedding day was the first time she ever wore lipstick, but certainly not the last. Estee credits her mother for the interest and passion she had for beauty. Her mothers grooming regiments were not forgotten as Estee remembers the applications of creams for her moms glow and soft skin. This motivated Estee to become the epitome of beauty. She thought that since actresses were beautiful she would become an actress, but that did not really satisfy her wholly. She dove into creating her own creams with the mentorship of her uncle who was a chemist and taught her how to mix up oils to create cleansers and creams. The first cream in her line was the Super-Rich All Purpose Cream derived from the mixing she learned from her uncle. At first these creations were for her personal use as she continued what her mothers grooming schedule. However that soon changed as the young woman was her own
