Joshua’s diplomatic repose and supportive attention to colleagues make him the strongest candidate for a graduate student award. He recognizes collegiality and community as central to navigating graduate life. Not only an organized intellectual with inspirational and ambitious interests. Joshua also takes time to guide undergraduates and fellow graduate students through complex material while listening to concerns and offering diverse resources. For example, as a TA last term, he didn’t find the writing guides students needed, so he wrote documents to assist students with critical analysis development. He truly loves and is dedicated to his own scholarship. He also cares about the success of others. Doing great work and creating a positive collegial community is his philosophy for success as a graduate student, and Joshua exemplifies it.

In addition to academic dedication, Joshua cares about creating and maintaining safe and happy communities. Prior to coming to UC Merced he participated in public service on college campuses and in the greater community to prevent sexual and domestic violence. As one of the graduate student representatives for CARE he is working with staff and the Office of Student Affairs to launch an annual White Ribbon Campaign, a movement of men working together to end violence against women.

Joshua’s research with children and youth combines political anthropology, cultural history, and community engaged creative arts to lift up the voices of kids. He has been a TA for History and Global Arts courses. Most recently, Joshua illustrated his research approach to two Photography classes so students could learn specific uses of photography as a research method. These talks sparked the interest of several undergraduates who expressed excitement that photography could be used in research.
