The entries I chose to reflect upon are journal entries three and four. Both entries dealt with the second writing prompt, which allowed the students to address the representation of White privilege in the media and raise awareness about its effect on a specific case. Additionally, both gave precise details about my writing process when constructing the Taylor Swift essay. What I am proud of is that these two entries were flip sides of the same argumentative coin. Additionally, these showcased my ability to use my distinct style in exact opposite conditions, by beginning with one point of view and ending with the entire paper’s focus ending in the converse.
In journal entry three displayed a great acquisition of skill: consistently maintaining

As I expressed in my journal, “I turned the paper completely around and used my old paper as counterarguments and wrote my new paper for hours without breaks.” From long nights working on one argument I realised that my argument was not strong enough to support my thesis and therefore thought it would be best to change the paper completely to satisfy my need to give the other side of the argument credit. I ended up using the entire first paper a strong base for my counterarguments in my second paper and it proved successful. In this, I continued my style of referencing but displayed versatility in my writing skills because I was able to manipulate the evidence in different ways to support my new argument. For example, with David Wise’s argument of Caucasians constantly needing to “guard their White privilege,” instead of agreeing with the evidence I was able to disprove it by writing in my essay, “Wise’s argument merely displays the hypersensitivity and over political correctness Caucasians are forced to keep in mind nowadays.” Afterwards, not only did I continually refer back to that over sensitivity, but I also maintained my style when discussing the opposing
When I first decided to expand my education, it had been so long since I had been to school, and I was very hesitant. I talked at length about my decision with my husband and with his encouragement, decided to enroll but still was not quite sure which degree program to enroll in. I knew that this was something that I had always wanted to do since I obtained my Associates Degree in Nursing, but I did not have the courage, nor did I want to give up the time with my family and children. I second guessed my abilities and my knowledge because it had been so long since I had been in college. Now that my children are about to graduate high school and
There are many costs associated with owning and driving a car. The purchase of a car is only the beginning. There are maintenance costs, fees, tolls, taxes, fuel and insurance. For the next few questions, you will explore these costs by talking to a parent or guardian about your driving responsibilities.
Dear journal, today in class I did a multiple choice on the Ethics of Research. I learnt so much from that activity from protecting participants from harm to inform consent. I have erudite that ethical considerations are a significant feature of research that all teacher researcher should be knowledgeable about. During class, the first thought came to my mind about ethics was rules for distinguishing right or wrong. According to Resnik (2015) he believes that Ethics is a norm that distinguish between what is acceptable and unacceptable behaviour. I think it is imperative for me to adhere to the ethical norms in research in which i will have Informed consent to avoid deception, confidentiality, anonymity, protecting an individual from harm.
I am going to look back at a situation on my unit in the operating room (OR) where I implemented a change using some of the distinguishing characteristics authentic leaders posses according to Maria Shirey in 2006. I have worked in the OR for 13 years and have witnessed many changes take place, both good and bad. Our situation was unique because staffing coverage must be 24 hours due to our level 1 trauma status. The RN’s brought forward the current system used for scheduling during holidays was unfair with no apparent pattern. It was very random with many of the same RN’s working the majority of the holidays. Nurses comments ranged from, “Why am I always on the major holidays, I never get to spend the holidays with my family,” and “the same people are getting the holidays off, why is that?” Management overlooked the fairness for covering the schedule. Holiday coverage is reduced to two teams and a charge nurse which consists of five staff members, allowing more staff to be off. Everything was status quo to management until it was mentioned at a staff meeting with much dissatisfaction.
I overcame my challenge that I had discussed in last weeks Journal by getting more organized. I made a to-do list and stuck to it. I wrote down every assignment due date and every test day on a calendar, so I knew exactly what was due and when. I also made sure to incorporate all meetings for extracurricular activities into my calendar. I got a planner and filled it with all upcoming test dates, assignment due dates, and meetings as well. I also became better at prioritizing and adding flexibility to my daily schedule. I made sure that I prioritized equal study time for all my classes but also added down time into my daily schedule for leisurely activities as well. My grades began to improve after I got more organized and learned to manage
Books of many kinds can provide helpful and relevant information to people. However, if readers are unsure how to apply it to their lives or make a personal connection with it, than the time spent reading is much less significant. Texts can come alive once a personal application or connection is made between the reader and the written material. In my reflection journal I will address at least two main points from the weekly reading from Contemporary Theories of Learning (Illeris, 2009) and Emotional Intelligence (Goleman, 2005). In addition, I will include
I have my placement with the Halton Catholic District School Board in a high school. In the afternoon, I am in a self-contained classroom and support a few students with diverse needs. I have now been there for a few weeks and therefore have seen how the students function and what their needs are.
Being a student that attends Zenith Academy, I have seen quite a number of faults in the way students conduct themselves while at school. Although it may be okay to spend time with your friends while at school, what’s not okay is having so much fun that you end up shoving other students who are trying to shift to their other class periods down the hall. What’s more disturbing, however, is that almost half of the students don’t pick up after themselves once lunchtime is over, obviously expecting others to do it for them. I am fully aware of the fact that the school has hired janitors, but it isn't completely impossible that some day a visitor may decide to pop up into the school cafeteria and have a heart attack once they see the bedlam occurring in a HIGH SCHOOL cafeteria ( That is, if the said visitor has heart problems).
I am an element of change. As situations come and go, I have learned how to adapt myself to be in the best position to succeed. Change is not just what drives me forward, it is what keeps me balanced. I have developed into a person that is able to successfully go from various changes – to mistakes – to learning and being able to move forward. Without making these critical mistakes and experiencing the almost-facetious amount of changes, I would not have been able to become the person I am today. Many facets of adulthood have been introduced as changes to me, some very recently. Some of these include creativity, a competitive nature, and individuality.
Being in theatre for my whole life has taught me a lot about myself and the world around me. You learn that there are so many different people and cultures in the world and how vastly different the are. As an actor we are continually putting ourselves in other people's shoes. This stressed empathy and a certain cultural understanding about context and timeliness. This leads me to think that I have a fair understanding of diversity. Diversity is acknowledging that there are an incredible amount of people that come from a plethora of backgrounds and have formed different cultural identities than the rest of the population. This sentence is incredibly vague, but diversity is also a vague word. Diversity in a sense means different, so it all depends on perspective. I look at Chapman as a diverse campus, which many would agree, but it is diverse from me for totally different reasons than it is for the person sitting next to me, or my roommate. This is incredibly important when you think in context of learning and in the American lifestyle. To learn effectively, academically and socially, you need to be exposed to a diverse population with diverse ideas to have a fully rounded education. The United States and the American culture was founded on the backs of diversity, which is a fact too often forgot. It is instrumental to the development of our country and culture that we recognize, respect, and nurture diversity especially in times of peril.
One evening, I was studying for my final exams with my friends in the library. We were there for almost the whole day, and most of us got a most of our assignments and studying done. As I meandered down to the printers to print my philosophy paper, I could not help but discern that some of the students around us were also getting their assignments done, albeit rather languidly. A closer look as to what they were doing showed that some students were checking their social media and watching Netflix, while others were online shopping. In other words, they were procrastinating. I knew that our studying period was brief; in fact, we had two or three days until our first finals started. I had a few compelling speculations on why people procrastinate, from that they know everything (unlikely), to they do not know what to study (more likely), or the fact that they are just lazy (very likely). Though I am also a victim of procrastinating, I try to focus on my studies, especially if it is exam season. My insights turned to reality when I asked my friend about something that we were supposed to study for the calculus exam. It turns out that he was watching a football game on his laptop, but he muted it to answer my question and to show me how to do a problem. He proclaimed that he will study it later, even though our exam was in less than forty-eight hours. He knew what and how to study, but he told me he wasn’t up for it. I observed that this is a familiar episode – every time a
My memory repeatedly tells me, the events that created the person who I am today occurred when I was constantly tortured during middle school. My square one fostered an exceptionally dreadful phase of my existence. Even though I am able to recall where my journey originated, my square one, I find it imperative that I move forward, sharing my experiences in hopes that one less person suffers.
We begin at an early age training our brain how to work in coordination with the rest of our body. Walking with one foot in front of the other, holding a fork and getting it from the plate to our mouth with the food still on it, all require training muscles to respond in a certain fashion. Then we progress and learn various other skills and facts that cause us to function in certain fashions. We learn what is deemed as right and wrong in society and then try to live within the norm. After much observation and study some of us, myself for one, believe that the sun comes up and goes down because that is how God made the world. That much I know to be true, but my understanding of how that works falls short. We try repeatedly to understand the things we know and yet we continue to search for clearer and sometimes even reasonable answers. How does our mind work? Do we know or do we understand? Turn left and you will go right, turn right and you will go left, said no one, until Destin Sandlin tried to ride a bike that worked backwards.
On November 26, I went to my first service at a non-denominational Christian church. My friend and I took the 20-minute drive to Lake Mills to the Word of Faith Dominion Church. Being that I consider myself a Christian, I figured that I would enjoy this service regardless of the differences between being non-denominational instead of Immanuel like my usual, but nothing would have prepared me for how amazing it actually was.
The content of this class covered a wide range of topics and it was difficult to present three conclusions. I had never taken an intro to psychology class or an educational studies class, this course was my introduction to many of these ideas and theories. After learning about the principle of educational psychology, I now realize we are surrounded by them in everyday life also how applicable they are. In this synthesis paper the three conclusions of how psychological theory relates to learning are “the use of extrinsic rewards in today’s classroom are overused and an emphasis on intrinsic rewards is needed”, “challenging student with support and guidance in the classroom will promote the growth of students”, and “competition is a useful tool in the classroom, but it needs to be managed and taught correctly”. For each of these conclusions, I will support using examples from my tutoring experiences at Northfield High School and coaching experience with 4th and 5th grade boys from the Northfield area, connection with class reading and theories, and examples from my personal journey as a learner.
