EDU 211: The Child and His/ Her World

For the past years, teachers all across America have been pressured to teach their students to perform well in test and state exams. With all this pressure put on students and teachers, they have lost the joy in school. In the article, “Joy in School,” by Steven Wolk, points out how joy has been lost and explains techniques teachers can use to bring it back in school. Within my paper I am going to summarize, point out five significant points, as well as my reactions: likes and dislikes about the article. The author opens up the article by introducing two quotes. This is a perfect example on how children and adults will learn whatever it is that they are interested in.
Joy 1: Pleasure in Learning
This is when we, as learners do not mind the difficulties that come across on trying to learn something and expected it as part of the learning process.
Joy 2: Freedom to Choose
Nurtures curiosity, inspires to ask questions and find joy in learning. Teachers can do this by allowing students choice of what to read while independent reading, write their choice of genres, and during math, science, art and social studies the topic of their choice to study. The students share with their classmate what they have learned.
Joy 3: Creating Things
School should help and inspire students to bring their own ideas and creations to life. This can be done through: “newspapers and magazines, brochures, stories, picture books, posters and murals, presentations, interviews, diagrams, plays and role-plays, photographs, paintings, songs, surveys, graphs and documentary. (Wolks, 2008)
Joy 4: Get Outside
Interacting in nature brings everyone joy. Teachers should incorporate their curriculum outdoors. Literacy can be done outside by: reading, writing and class discussion. Science is all around us when outdoors, making the possibilities endless on topics to study.

Joy 5: Transform Assessment
The assessment at school needs to be change. We assess our own skills all the time: reading and writing fluency, cooking, driving and hair
