Maslow’s (1970) order of needs was applied to ensure that Joy’s identified needs, principles and values were highlighted. This is to promote a holistic approach to ensure the patient’s basic needs are met first to enable advance point of self-actualisation. Joy was supported through this process as it indicated that if her care was not managed effectively it would affect her advancement through the dependence/independence continuum, therefore, hampering the existence of a holistic plan of care. Failure to recognise patient needs or to address the identified needs can result in detrimental consequences for the patient. It is therefore vital to ensure the whole care planning process is comprehensive (Barrett, Wilson and Woollands, 2012).

The role of MTD was important as this helped to collaborate effectively by liaising with other professional (Kozier, 2008). Also a qualified nurse should have the necessary skills to promote the health and wellbeing of individuals as stated in the NMC (2015). So communication is essential to integrating health promotion in Joy’s care, which was a trait already acquired to accomplish the nurse’s role. Health promotion was applied throughout Joy’s intervention through ‘Making Every Contact Count’ which enables patients to make a healthier choice based on behaviour changing approaches NHS Yorkshire and Humber, (2012). Though this was difficult due to Joy’s dementia condition, it is part of the nurse’s role to offer reassurance, promote independence and achieve a therapeutic relationship. They were necessary behaviours to acquire when encouraging Joy to adopt a healthier lifestyle as acknowledged by Maville and Huerta
In this report I will be investigating how care services meet the needs of individuals by firstly analysing the needs of an individual using care services. Then I will go on to explain the roles of the care planning process in identifying needs, and explain the features of a positive care practise. After explaining that, I will analysis positive care environments and evaluate how they meet needs before finally explaining the role of legislation in promoting a positive care environment.
“Nursing encompasses autonomous and collaborative care of individuals of all ages, families, groups and communities, sick or well and in all settings. Nursing includes the promotion of health, prevention of illness, and the care of ill, disabled and dying people. Advocacy, promotion of a safe environment, research, participation in shaping health policy and in patient and health systems management, and education are also key nursing roles” (ICN 2010)
In nursing practice, communication is essential, and good communication skills are paramount in the development of a therapeutic nurse/patient relationship. This aim of this essay is to discuss the importance of communication in nursing, demonstrating how effective communication facilitates a therapeutic
This assignment will explore the effect of the long term condition dementia. It will focus on a service user who has recently been admitted onto an assessment ward and their family. It will explore the nurse’s role and how they will support and manage the patient’s illness. The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) (2015) state that individual’s rights to confidentiality must be respected at all times, therefore all names mentioned in this assignment have been changed to maintain confidentiality.
It is important to review care and support plans as people’s needs change. By including the person, their family then everyone knows what is happening and the family can help to monitor mood swings and behaviour. The individual and the family can express their views and preferences and any relevant risk assessments may be done with everyone involved. By monitoring the individual, a decision can be made as to whether the changes are effective and if the best care is being given to encourage independence and promote dignity.
Health and social care professions have in common the concept of a 'duty of care' toward their users. This means that the wellbeing of the service user should be central to their work. All treatment given must have a therapeutic benefit to the user or must be essential for saving life.
To begin with the person is the centre of the plan, to be consulted with and their views must always come first: It should include all aspects of their care, and every professional should work together to provide it. (Leathard 2000) Autonomy refers to an individuals’ ability to come to his or her own decisions and requires nurses to respect the choices patients make concerning their own lives (Hendrick 2000).However Gillon Argues that the principle respect for autonomy may need some restriction, otherwise we may be morally obliged to respect an autonomous course of action with unthinkable consequences.( Gillon 1986) Every human being has an intrinsic value, they all have a right to well being, to self-fulfilment and to as much control over their own lives as is consistent with others (British Association of Social Workers 2002).Professional Judgement and patient preference cannot be suspended if practice is to be safe and effective rather than routine(DOH 2005) Alex had to attend this session as it was within his Timetable, how could it have been effective?, he was unhappy and
Therapeutic communication aims to accentuate understanding of the client’s situations to health professionals, to achieve a greater outcome of health. It focuses on the clients need not the nurses. Pontes (2008) notes that health professionals verbally communicate with clarity and brevity
Nurses play an important role in promoting health within the patient, family, and community (Kemppainen, Tassavainen, & Turunen, 2012). The focus of patient care has been transferred from treating the illness to disease prevention (Mchugh, Robinson, & Chesters, 2010). The implementation of consultation, education, and follow up exams can increase the overall quality of life for an individual (Kemppainen et al., 2012). I will discuss the various roles of a nurse in health promotion along with the multiple work environments in which they can be implemented within. I will also reveal the maintenance plan of my own personal health regimen.
Often in practice, we as nurses deal with a variety of diseases and treatments and often have to react to the illness that the patient presents with upon our interaction. While this is an essential piece of our practice, we also have a duty to our patients to be proactive in preventing specific health-related consequences based on their risk factors and to promote their health and well being. Health promotion as it relates to nursing is about us empowering our patients to increase their control over their lives and well beings and includes: focusing on their health not just illness, empowering our patients, recognizing that health involves many dimensions and is also effected by factors outside of their control (Whitehead et al. 2008)..
The VC between the patient and the dietitian was positive, as a supportive climate was created (Holli and Beto 2014:23). The dietitian spoke clearly at a good volume since she did not mumble. She communicated effectively as she would explain what she said, for example how smoking could affect Mr Jackson’s health “smoking causes high blood pressure, which makes the situation worse”. The health and care professions council (HCPC) guidelines show that it is important to communicate effectively, as it can affect the assessment and engagement of the service user (HCPC 2013:9). Meaning it would be unlikely for Mr Jackson to adopt a healthy behaviour change if
In conclusion, by researching my chosen psychological theories, I have gained an understanding of how they are such an important tool to any care professional. I was able to gain insight and reasoning to the way individuals responded in a particular way, in return, this allows for me to provide a level of support suited to Mrs X. When in practice it is important to bear in mind different psychological theories, this gives a greater perspective and understanding of an individual’s circumstances both past and present. I have found both Maslow’s hierarchy of needs And Collin Murray Parkes model of loss to be beneficial in allowing me to get to know and understand why Mrs X behaves in particular ways, what might be seen as attention seeking behaviour
A nursing diagnosis identifies an actual or potential response of a patient to a health problem (Jones 2009). Nursing diagnoses are important because they provide the foundation for the selection of nursing interventions (Walton 2008). This care plan is the concluding half to the initial care plan that identified nursing diagnoses and goals with the aim of promoting the holistic wellbeing, mental health, and independence of a 68 year old Mr. Bertoli who has returned home from hospital after experiencing a stroke. Particular emphasis will be placed on proposed interventions to achieve Mr. Bertoli’s healthcare goals and the provision of rationales. This is important to justify the significance of the interventions and indicate
Throughout my current involvement at the nursing home, I have already realized the numerous amounts of therapeutic communication I have shared with a patient. Whether assisting someone to eat their breakfast, walking them to their bedroom or just engaging in a conversation, I have established a professional rapport between them and myself. It is crucial for a nurse to build rapport with a patient. When a patient begins to open up and is willing to share their concerns, nurses must be able to provide the correct care to comfort their needs (Jasmine, 37). By making the patient feel as though they can trust us,
In healthcare, there is a functional and purposeful relationship that exists between the nurse, the doctor and the other interdisciplinary team. This relationship established by the healthcare team comes with a responsibility aimed at achieving a goal, which is to assist the patient to be able to gain independence and progress after hospitalization or rehabilitation. What is paramount to the healthcare team is focusing on the basic human needs of the patient gearing towards health which is a building block of health and wellness. With this being said, the writer chooses Virginia Henderson’s theory of needs because it gives an insight or guides the nurse for what to look for in caring for our patient’s needs with her 14 components of nursing care which still apply to modern nursing care and practice up till present day . As Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) working in the Transitional Care Unit (TCU), her theory is made visible through my patient’s recovery process experienced every single day. “Henderson 's principles and practice of nursing fall under the category of grand theory that can be applied to many types of nursing” (Nicely & DeLario, 2011).
