Judaism, Islam, and Christianity are some of the religions that most individuals can relate to, being the three largest religions in the world. Like many religions they share many differences and also some similarities. One difference that these religions hold is their view of Jesus Christ. Similarities are surprisingly common to find among some religions because of the basis they put on one another. Some similarities between these religions include: belief of monotheism and the influence of Zoroastrianism had on each religion. Also another similarity carried out by these three religions would be the significance of Abraham. Some other differences include: religious texts and also how they approach God in prayer.

There are many similarities and differences between Judaism, Christianity and Islam. There are also many differences that separate the three major religions of the world. This paper will delve into all three of them.

Since the dawn of man, millions of people around the world coming from all kinds of diverse cultures and different backgrounds have been born into a family where some sort of religion is practiced. Fortunately, in the modern day here in the United States, we are free to worship and practice any religion we please. Two of the main religions in the United States and North America in general is Judaism and Christianity. It goes without saying that these two religions do have a lot in common, which is mostly due to the fact that Judaism was the forefather of Christianity. Mecca is regarded as the holiest city in the religion of Islam and is the birthplace of Mohammed. For centuries Mecca has served as a major economic hub, for it lays in between Europe and Asia. Mohammed is once exiled from Mecca but returns years later with an army. But Mohammed recognized the importance of this city and knew that its financial influence would be key toward to founding of Islam. The context of this will be showing how Judaism and Christianity more similar than most people think. Three ways these two religions are the same are, both are monotheistic, how both share same holy city, and their beliefs to the “Good Life.”

Jerusalem is important for Christians because it is the place where Jesus lived his last days and experienced his suffering and crucifixion, death on the cross, and resurrection. Precisely in the city of Jerusalem is the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, which was built on what is considered the tomb of Christ. For the Jews, Jerusalem is sacred because of the Wailing Wall, which is the remains of the second temple built by Herod the Great, king of Judea. (The first temple was built by King Solomon). Finally, Jerusalem is also holy to those who profess faith to Allah (al-Quds in Arabic). The mosque, Dome of the Rock, was built upon the very place that the prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven, according to the Muslim religion. I found it fascinating and interesting to see that all three religions profess that their holiest place on earth are all in close proximity to one another. Does this mean anything?

The Christian religion views Jerusalem of importance because it is the location of “His crucifixion, burial and ascension” and it “symbolizes the new people of God redeemed by the Messiah, Jesus Christ.” Christians view this location as a place of worship because of the important sacrifices and events that occurred within Jerusalem. Judaism believes that Jerusalem is significant because God “spoke of the place that He would choose for His people”. The place that he spoke of was Jerusalem also known as Zion. Two Temples were built and both of them were destroyed, which caused major devastation to the Jews. They continue to pray for those Temples and have a holiday in honor of the destroyed Temples. For Jews, Jerusalem is not just a city of importance “the city itself is holy”. It is prominent and significant to the Jews and it is more than just a city to them. Islam views Jerusalem as an important location but the Mecca is a more significant location to them. Jerusalem is important because the Prophet of Mohammad visited location in Jerusalem such as the Prophet of Ibrahim and the Church of the Nativity. The Prophet of Mohammad is a strong, important figure to the Muslims. Mount Moriah, located in Jerusalem, is one of the holiest locations to the Muslims. It is the “Rock where the as-Aqsa Mosque stands”. Each religion has important landmarks throughout Jerusalem which is a major reason of its importance to each of them. Finally, I will be closing with the differences that these two religions have and how it has affected people around the world with the disagreements that both sides have in their style of teachings and its implemented actions that one has to follow.
