"When I was little I would think of ways to kill my daddy." [P.1], says eleven-year-old Ellen. Thus the young narrator begins her life-story, in the process painting an extraordinary self-portrait. “Ellen Foster” is a powerful story of a young girl growing up in a burdensome world. As one reads this work presented by Kaye Gibbons, a chill runs down their back. Ellen, the main character is faced with a hard life dealing with endless losses, with the deaths of both her parents and her grandmother being included. Why would one get a chill you wonder? This individual has thoughts and feelings that many have never experienced and cannot express. Ellen is merely a child no older then the age of ten but if not knowing this fact,

One by one each person is taken to the woods and shot while the grandmother tries to spare her life with The Misfit. Suddenly with the threat of death near her door she suddenly tries to be something she is not. She sympathizes with him and tries to relate to him. All of this comes to no avail if anything it antagonizes him which throws a switch in his mind and he reacts the only way he knows how, by shooting her in the chest and putting his problem to an end.
The audience is then presented with the complete opposite, through the relationship Judy has with her father. We can see that the father is masculine and insensitive through the way he treats Judy. When Judy tries to show her love to her father by giving him a kiss on the cheek, he goes on to slap her on the face and tells her girls her age are not supposed to do things like that. Then we see the father pick up the son and give him all the attention completely ignoring Judy. Some may say that Judy¡¯s father is a chauvinist. The father¡¯s actions then explain why Judy became involved with Buzz and his crew. It can be argued that because at home she is ignored by her father, she seeks for attention through a manly figure, that being Buzz. After Buzz dies, however, she then moves into a relationship with Jim. What attracts her to Jim is the fact that he is strong man, yet is sensitive and sincere at the same time. He gives her what she has been striving for and looking for from her dad and that fact makes her
