There is a direct link to prostitution and industrial development. In boomtowns, seaports and industrialized cities, prostitution was apart of the everyday life. Historians have found a direct correlation between economic prosperity and the amount of prostitutes in an area. In Eau Claire, Wisconsin the ratio between prostitutes to workingmen was one to fourteen (Ripp-Shucha 36). Through this analysis, it has been shown that an area that was about to experience an economic boom, there would be more prostitutes residing. Bulette created Julia’s Palace, the most elegant and prosperous brothel in Virginia City, Nevada. She was honorary member of the Engine Company Number One, as she was a close friend to firemen in Virginia City. Bulette was strangled in her sleep on January 20, 1867. Bulette’s death received notoriety because she was a close friend with many of Virginia’s elite, even though she was a prostitute. The workingmen of Washoe District erected a monument dedicated for her because of her kindness and generosity despite her modest means. (Ditmore 59). Another famous madam was Bessie Harper. Every year at Christmas time, she provided the poorest families in Silver City, New Mexico with food and coal. The act of kindness she is most known for took place in the summer of 1885. A group of Apache Indians brutally mutilated and killed a local Mexican family. Harper brought new clothes for the family to be buried in and paid all the funeral expenses.
