Meanwhile, West, who suffers from insomnia, had secretly built an underground fire-proof and sound proof sleeping chamber. He employed a skilled mesmerist to send him into a deep sleep when needed. West only allowed his mesmerist and servant to know of this chamber. One night after being put to sleep, West’s entire home was burnt to the ground. Though West was protected, because no one knew of his chamber, Julian was assumed dead by his fiancé, friends, and family. Over one hundred years later, Julian's secret chamber is discovered by Doctor Leete, who was preparing the site for the construction of a new laboratory. West, unaged and still alive, is revived by Doctor Leete and taken to his home. When awakened Julian explained that he fell asleep on May 30, 1887 Doctor Leete reveals to West it is now September 10, 2000. The new society is a result from advances in large-scale production. There is a system of publicly-owned capital with the government controlling the nation’s total production and distributing the national output equally among all citizens. The nineteenth century system of monopolistic capitalism had evolved and merged into government-owned. Large companies had formed monopolies that eventually became nationalized. Over generations, businesses had merged into huge combinations and evolved into the placement of all capital in the hands of the government.
