The Tragedy of Julius Caesar can be interpreted in multiple ways when it comes to who the characters are and if the name holds true. An immense amount of people would say that the conspirators are the antagonists while Mark Antony is the protagonist. Others may say it was only Cassius who was the antagonist. Many readers believe that the name of the play is completely wrong and William Shakespeare messed up. There are numerous amounts of evidence for each concept. As it does for many, my idea of who was who in the play varied as I continued to read on. Opinions may differ, but I believe the protagonist is Brutus while the antagonist is Mark Antony and the name holds true to the play.

He wishes to change Caesar’s will so the Romans will receive less than what they were promised in his funeral speech and he also doesn’t want to rule with Lepidus. Antony is manipulative. He persuades the crowd to change their opinions on Brutus in act 3 scene 2 by saying, “Yet Brutus says he was ambitious, and sure he is an honorable man. I speak not to disprove what Brutus spoke, but here I am to speak what I do know. You all did love him once, not without cause.What cause withholds you then to mourn for him? O judgement, thou art fled to brutish beasts, and men have lost their reason! Truly, I believe the name of the play is not a misnomer. Julius Caesar does tragically die. While some may say, “the play should be called The tragedy of Marcus Brutus,” I say it shouldn’t. Brutus could have lived if Caesar had never died. The play is Brutus’ story, but his story would have never evolved like it did without the death of Caesar.
