Julius Caesar Often, when we think of ancient Rome, the name Julius Caesar is not unfamiliar to us. Julius Caesar is a well known man in history and he definitely made his mark on it. He was a well educated man, a leader, and a tactful general. After seizing control of Rome, Caesar made many social and governmental reforms which still have affect on our lives today. He also played a major role in the demise of the Roman republic and the rise of the Roman Empire. But was Julius Caesar a bad guy or a good guy? Was the intelligent and energetic Julius Caesar only a cover-up for what was really a driven, power hungry and cunning man? His family was not politically influential but Caesar himself rapidly progressed within the Roman political system, becoming in succession quaestor, aedile, and praetor. In 61-60 BC he served as governor of the Roman province of Spain. To strengthen his political power Caesar made a pact with two very wealthy and influential Roman men, Pompey and Crassus, who later helped him, get elected as consul in 59 BC. Soon, Caesar’s success and ambition alienated strongly republican senators. A group of these assassinated Caesar on the Ides of March 44 BC. This sparked the final round of civil wars that ended the Republic and brought about the elevation of Caesar's great nephew and designated heir, Octavian, as Augustus, the first emperor. Julius Caesar was a man of many talents. His oratory skills, sharp sense of humor, charm, and personality all combined to make him a successful leader and politician.
