1. When people say they “want justice”, what do they want? How can we achieve justice as a community?

Justice can be a controversial subject when it comes to what people want to get out of it. Victims of offences want offenders to be penalised accordingly for their actions, though justice does not always work in their favour. For some people in society, justice can vary from having to pay significant fines to incarceration but how can we truly achieve justice as a community? What do recent criminal statistics in Australia reveal about the rights and responsibilities of Australians? What is the link, if any, between crime and social inequality?

Crime statistics in Victoria, in ‘2013-14, Victoria Police recorded 433,718 offences state-wide, an increase of 5.7% from the number of offences recorded in 2012/13. The 2013/14 crime rate per 100,000 population was 7489.5, an increase of 3.7% compared with 2012/13’ (Vic Pol Statistics 2015)
These statistics show that

Social inequality means inequalities in life that people may face such as employment, gender, race, education. Personally, I do think there is a link between social inequality and crime, for example if you are brought up in a lower class, you may be less inclined to get an education because of your environment and people around you. If you are unemployed and cannot seem to find employment you may lean toward crimes such as theft to be able to get what you cannot afford. These social inequalities may make you more susceptible to crime.

9. Does everyone deserve the opportunity to receive justice according to due process principles in spite of crime control
