Justification of Silas’s Actions
In the book, The Da Vinci Code, Silas quest to find the Holy Grail first is justified because of his goals, his past, and his faith. Firstly, he regrets the deeds he has done trying to find the grail, such as killing the Priory leaders, but his goal to save the Church and bring the world to God, in his mind, outweighs the wrongs he has done. He believes the teachings of Jesus, “.. the message Silas had been taught from the beginning, and the message he held in his heart. And yet this was the message the enemies of Christ now threatened to destroy,” and that by protecting the “message” of Christ by doing what he must to find the Holy Grail, his actions were justified. Secondly, Silas has been mistreated his
If someone gets put into a bad situation that doesn’t make them a bad person. If someone does something wrong can they make it right again? Of course! In the Summer of 1692, in Salem Village a group of girls get bored and cause the Salem Witch Trials to start. At this time, John Proctor is living with his wife, three sons, and his servant, Mary Warren, in Salem Village. John Proctor is put into bad situations and he does bad things. It’s what he chooses after this happens, that will truly define him. John commits many bad sins. He does not repent for his sins and then he tries to hide them, he covers them up and and lets his sins sit and eat at him. John Proctor’s choices define him as the
John Proctor is a symbolic Christ figure in the Crucible. Despite his lustful sin for Abigail, he still is a symbolic Christ figure. As we know it, Jesus was a righteous man. He did everything for the benefit of the people and he came to save the world. Humans have proven to be so ignorant. John Proctor cared for Salem and he wanted to bring justice and truth in Salem. As a well know Christ figure, Proctor epitomizes a being that shows a multitude of characteristics of Proctor. The confrontation of evil in the society, the hanging of Proctor, and resistance to temptation.
John Proctor felt so bad for the way he acted and the things he had done in the past and would not give up until they were made up for. John made his sin right by convincing Abigail that their relationship was over and he could no longer have any contact with her because it was such a wrong thing (Miller 22). He was devastated and embarrassed after admitting this situation to the court but begged them for forgiveness because he knew how wrong he was. “A man may think God sleeps, but god sees everything, I know it now” (Miller 110). John himself was way too harsh on his situation, punishing himself far worse than he needed. He told the court he was not worth the dust of the feet on all of those who were hanged because he does not think he deserves as much as others due to his sin (Miller143). Even his wife Elizabeth knew it was not her who needed to forgive him, but it was he himself. “I do not judge you. The magistrate sits in your heart that judges you” (Miller 55). John carried his sin with him until the very last scene of the play. As a hero, John made up for his bad ways. Towards the end of the play, when John had confessed to seeing the devil, he denied seeing anyone else there with him. John stood his ground, pleading to them that it was only him who was there (Miller 140). John made up his sin to his wife, Elizabeth, by fighting hard for her safety and for the court to let her go. He told them how much of an honest women she was, how their accusations were completely wrong (Miller 92). All of John’s heroic actions were to make up or the sin he knew he committed, which was the only way he could think to forgive himself. As readers could see, John’s self-assessment of himself was very wrong, he never saw how good of a person he really
There is an old saying that goes, “to cut off their nose to spite their face.” This saying has been applied to John Proctor and his decision to be hanged. Reverend Hale says John’s decision is out of pride and will ultimately hurt him. However, his actions can also be viewed as very noble, depending on how one looks at it. I see his actions as very honorable because he wanted to be right with God which is a main factor in this play.
“ I say - I say - God is dead” (3. 1148 -1149). John is saying God is dead and isn't going to save anyone. John does says this so they think he did the witchcraft in Salem and to sacrifice himself so more innocent people don't die, John just wants everything over with and no more unnecessary hangings. John is saying take him instead of all these innocent people. “ I’d have to see some honesty in it. Let them that never lied die now to keep their souls it is pretense for me, a ranity that will blind god nor keep my children out of the wind” (4. 492-496 ). John is saying for all those who haven't lied let them not die and take me instead. After John found out Elizabeth proctor was accused he knew he needed Mary Warren to testify. “You’re coming to the court with me, Mary. You will tell it to the court” ( 2. 970 ). Mary Warren knows the truth but won't say it because Abigail will kill her if she does say the truth. This supports he is innocent because he is going to have Mary Warren tell the court the truth. To wrap this up all the reasons i stated above proves John Proctor is innocent. John proctor is not to blame for the events that had happened in Salem. John proctor was a hero in Salem because he took the blame and got hung so only he would face the consequences and not more innocent
As a good Puritan one must always follow the Ten Commandments. John Proctor had failed to do so. While his ill wife was in bed, John had an affair with the naïve Abigail Williams. The shame of his affair led him to concede his actions, like a good Christian. The guilt of his actions had made him frail. He wanted to regain Elizabeth’s trust. He regretted having hurt his wife. Although his wife had somewhat started to regain trust in him. He continued to have the guilt. He made himself paranoid over his actions. “I do not judge you. The magistrate sits in your heart that judges you. I never thought you but a good man, John” (Miller 55). Later, by having confessed his acts of lechery to the court, he would save the life of his beloved wife.
Therefore, Wieland’s supposed holy motivation of pleasing the Lord is discounted by his ignorance of the nature of God. Though Wieland’s actions follow a desire to please the Lord, one must question why Wieland did not stop to consider such an illegitimate command.
With a man just trying to make a living with his life, he finds himself involved with something he didn’t want to get involved with at all. He was struggling not to get involved with the trials and yet he still wanted to live his own life not being told what to do by other people while still being like by other people in the community. He didn’t want his name to be ruined by signing that confession. If he did his life would be ruined people would think of him as being evil when his name would be mentioned. He didn’t want
By admitting he had an affair with a teen John admitted to adultery tarnishing his reputation in the name of justice. John even gives up his life, unwilling to charge other innocent people with witchcraft, because it is the just thing to do. John then Although John committed lechery, he redeemed himself by sacrificing his name, his reputation, and his life in the pursuit of justice.
John states “God help me, I lusted, and there is a promise in such sweat. But it is a whore’s vengeance, and you must see it…” (193 L. 864-868). These reasons show why John Proctor is honorable for confessing his
The purpose of the final act of The Crucible is the shine some sort of light into the people of Salem during these trials to show that not everyone is as they seem. The whole trail could have been stopped from the moment it began if Reverend Parris had only told the truth to the people of Salem. John sacrificed his life for Elizabeth and his two sons, ("PROCTOR: 'Do that which is good, and no harm shall come to you.'") (Act 3, p. 88)
Chaucer was a writer from the Anglo Saxon Era in which he did many significant things in his short life. He is known to this day as the father of our language as we know it today. He wrote the series of stories called the Canterbury Tales, which consist of many different characters that each tell a story. In these series of stories he is us using the characters to express his mind and feelings towards the church. Chaucer is upset with the church because he knows what they are doing and how corrupt they really are. How the priests are supposed to be poor, but instead they tell the people that come to confess that everything will be alright if they give the priests a certain amount of currency. Also how the priests are not suppose to have intercourse because they are married to the church, but yet they are getting with women. The purpose of the tales is to make a political point on the hypocrisy of the church and the inequality of women to men. Of the twentyfive characters in the General Prologue there were three that stood out to me the most. The three characters are, The Squire, The Friar, and The Cook.
The Salem witch trials was a story of envy, lies, and the danger of the people. Others wouldn’t defend those accused, and if they did, they themselves were eventually charged as witches. In many ways, defending others was condemning yourself. Such was the case for John Proctor in “The Crucible”. John Proctor was someone who had made mistakes, but through his own crucible made peace with himself and defended the honor of himself and the others that would not admit to witchcraft.
