This is a topic that always seems to interest me whenever I see an adolescent committing a serious crime in the paper. In the past I have had pretty strong opinions on the subject when it involved a very serious crime that an adolescent has committed. However, I had not considered the concept of trial for emerging adults. I have decided after researching the topic that juveniles and emerging adults should be tried differently than adults.
A reason why I believe this is according to University of Rochester Medical Center “The rational part of a teen’s brain isn’t fully developed and won’t be until age 25 or so.” (Understanding the Teen Brain, 2018, para. 1) When an adult thinks rational part of their brain they are using the prefrontal cortex. This is the part of the brain that responds to good judgement and long-term consequences. Teens however think with the emotional part of their brain known as the amygdala. In …show more content…

“Research has shown that children in the adult criminal justice system are 34 percent more likely to be arrested again then those convicted of similar offenses in juvenile court.” (Children tried as Adults Face Danger, less Chance for Rehabilitation, 2014, para.10) Adolescents are also to be high candidates for rehabilitation due to their brain being under developed. Adolescents that are serving time in adult prisons and jails are also at a significant risk of being sexually assaulted and are much more likely to commit suicide. “One solution that has been proposed to ‘protect’ adolescents in adult prisons and jails is to put them in solitary confinement.” (Gunasekera, 2015, para 2) This means an adolescent would be locked down for up to 23 hours a day in a small cell with artificial lighting.
