The former DC school chancellor Michelle Rhee and the president of Harlem Children’s Zone, Geoffrey Canada are two leaders whose work stood in out in 2010 as an example of leadership that showed courage, tenacity, and dedication to the future of this country through the education of children. They were also featured in the documentary “Waiting for Superman” directed by David Guggenheim that showed a handful of diverse students undertaking an exhausting journey through public education, evaluating the drop-out rates, and academic disadvantages that they and students all across American are faced with and the contribution that leaders such as Michelle Rhee and Geoffrey Canada play a part in helping the education system prosper, and saving them from the failing statistics that continue to rise in public schools.

For the purpose of this assignment, the leader I have chosen Ms. J, the principal of a charter school in New Orleans charter school named Harriet Tubman Charter School. Ms. J was also a founder of a school network that oversees 3 elementary to 8th grade schools. Founded in 2011 the schools now serve over 1700 students in the New Orleans area. Tubman Charter school has a staff of eighty. Ms. Lauses role is to oversee eight staff members that ensure that the school produces leading results for the state as well as promising scholars that will path their way to college. As the principal of this school specifically, Ms. J has large obstacles that go beyond the walls of the school. Harriet Tubman Charter school is within a neighborhood that struggles both economically and educationally. Almost 100% of the scholars qualify for a free lunch and are black or Latino and the kindergartens scholars that arrive on the first day know only one or two letters of the alphabet. Historically before Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans on 38% of public school students graduated high school (quote). While most people see this as a place where most people see extreme challenges, Ms. J see’s it as an opportunity for change and promise.

All students deserve a quality education regardless of race, gender, socio-economic status, or zip code. At Aurum Preparatory Academy Charter School (“Aurum Prep”), each of our students will receive a quality education that will prepare them for success in college and career. We know from numerous examples of high achieving schools in the communities of Oakland and around the country that all students can achieve at high levels when provided with the proper structure, strong instruction, and clear guidance. We will provide our students with a rigorous and seamless secondary education rooted in expanding their literacy and mathematics skills, and in full alignment with rigorous national standards as adopted by the State of California. At Aurum Prep, we foster character development through our FIRST values: Focus, Integrity, Respect, Self-Determination, and Team. For students to determine their own life’s trajectory, they must have a foundation that prepares them to (a) excel in college and life and (b) become responsible leaders in their communities and in our world. We must have high expectations and clear structures, all provided within a culture of joy for learning, working hard, and honoring our students’ fullest self-determined potential.

I am writing out of concern that the medical influence of our southern neighbour - the US - is gaining ground in our country. The American Medical Association, in particular, aims to influence our doctors towards changing how we do medicine in Canada. The recent annual Halifax meeting last August 23 to 26, for instance, conducted under the leadership of the Canadian Medical Association, has an 80,000 member group ready to lobby for mandatory vaccinations (Mihalovic n.p.). If their influence among legislators is strong enough, they can eventually force parents to vaccinate their children in order to access educational institutions.
Racial and Social equality is when people of all races are given an equal opportunity, however in The Book “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, we don't see that Racial Equality, but we do see the Injustice and racial problems people had back in the 1930’s. The author shows us and helps us learn about these problems by using different characters that had a different effect on the story. This story is told by a little girl named Scout Finch whose father is a Lawyer who represents Tom Robinson who is accused of Raping and Beating Mayella Ewell, Atticus Finch knowing that he is going to lose the Court Case still tries and doesn't give up because he is trying to change the way people think about Skin Colored People. And he teaches this to his Children who still don't understand what is happening. “Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win”.
