Saints Michael and Theresa Youth Ministry of the combined parishes: Saint Theresa’s in Kenilworth, NJ and Saint Michael’s in Cranford, NJ has been the epitome of good and positive in my life. I was always the kid in my family that enjoyed philosophical debate, and now with my recent love for African-American culture and history, I feel that the Telluride Association Sophomore Seminar would be just up my alley. Sitting in a room with a handful of other African-American high schoolers that have the same fire for learning and discussion as I would be wonderful, and possibly would foster a plethora of great new friendships. The workshops lead by the adult professionals would also serve as a good networking opportunity as well as the chance to understand what career opportunities would possibly available to me. I am a young intelligent poor African-American that has Haitian heritage living in Orlando, attending a predominately caucasian school on a magnet.
I can give to the Howard University community through excellence, leadership, truth and service by getting involved within the community. From what I know there are many opportunities Howard provides to get involved in student life. It’s important to me to connect and take pride in my school. Excellence is the goal. While being in the community I will constantly remind myself that I am there to have fun but ultimately to make something of myself and strive for success in my academics. If I strive in my academics, I know that I will strive in life. Leadership will help me put myself out there. It will help me get involve and take charge. I know that I am intelligent and I have a bright mind that will bring many ideas to the table. I want to

My family household income was below the poverty level and we relied on housing assistance During many of my childhood years. I was 12 when my parents separated. My father lost his job and has not contributed financially to the family since. Based on my families experiences and my later service in a clinical setting within my community, I believe the communities in which I grew up were medically underserved. My success, despite the challenges resulting from my socioeconomic and familial background, is proof of my potential to succeed and survive hardships. I hope to use my experiences to inform my practice of medicine in underserved

The community rotation was very challenging. At the beginning I thought I would be educating veterans about overall nutrition and referring them to nutrition programs designed to prevent disease and promote health. Nonetheless, it was a lot more than that. First of all, I had just finished my food service rotation and had no have the chance to interact with any patients. Thus, I had to learn quickly how to work with the Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) which is the software used to enter patients’ information and write notes (Department of Veterans Affairs, 2005). After one day in my community rotation I was already seeing patients on my own and writing notes.

Although Alabaster is one large community in itself, because of its size, it contains quite a few facets of diversity. In its self, it is a very welcoming town, as I have had my own experience with being assimilated within the town. When I was seven we moved from Mississippi to Alabama, due to my father’s work. Alabaster was the first and final choice of where we chose to live. When we moved I was in the first grade and I remember is everyone being very welcoming at school. This trend also continued as watching people move to our school from other places, we were always very welcoming. The schools aside, Alabaster is also home to quite a few ethnicities.
