In the metamorphosis, Kafka captures the absurdist side of grief and human tragedy in the rational description of the impossible. By externalizing the psyche into a nondescript and incongruous milieu, Kafka creates a lacuna between the vicarious premise of literature and his own conception of it. In doing so, the idea of fundamental human separation, and the irrationality of emotion (in essence, humanity) are presented as being as alien as the absurdity of the metamorphosis.

The character of Gregor Samsa embodies the central aspect of the novels absurdism: The incongruity of his very (transformed) existence, as well as the of his social surroundings create a disengaging sense of contradiction, leading us immediately to challenge the literal …show more content…

REDUNDANT
In effect the whole structure becomes altered: The lack of exposition initially creates a separation between the real, our common world of the antecedent action and that of the post metamorphosis, novel timeline. This however does not become a radical departure from reality, but instead allows the development of the metamorphosis as a transection of reality.

The idea that since Gregors metamorphosis has no background, explanation or inherent justification is not only abhorrent to our ideas of rationality, but also our sentiments of morality. Within the "idealistic" or “conventional” conception of literature, the existence of the author as the usually benevolent "god" is manifested as a rational arbitrator; even within a hypothetical reality there is some guiding logic. The contradiction between the internal consistency of the text with our own presence firmly establishes the novel as its own
