It was nighttime when we arrived in Kansas City. Downtown was lit up like an architectural wonder and I watched our kid's eyes sparkle with captivation. We were greeted with the splendid scent of mouth-watering food, the chatters of people, and the high energy of city life. We were all entranced. We never realized how lonely our lives were before we moved here.
Before I go further, I need to tell you about a memory. Back in the year 2001 I met my now husband of 13 years and fell in love instantly. One of my favorite memories of him is watching him twirl glow sticks into the air perfectly to the rhythm of electronic music. Not long after that, we got married and started a family. Our family was our tribe, but as time goes on, kids grow up, you realize that your kids are going to move out one day and start their own families. It can become lonely in our older years without them. That's why it's so important to find your people, your home, your tribe.

Yes, that's a great thing, but like I said before, time goes and before too long my husband and I were feeling the loneliness of a secluded family life. Moving to a new city felt like we could be setting up ourselves to be even lonelier. While we've always loved being the psychedelic sheep of the family, we were moving to a place where we didn't know a single soul. Unbeknownst to us, Kansas City would be the place that we could finally call home, and also found our home in
In my early years, I hadn't given much thought to the depth of this city, only knowing bits and pieces of the puzzle that I was trying to put together in my head. However, as the years went by, I grew accustomed to the city, its people, and its ways. This city influenced and shaped my persona into the individual I am today. This city taught me a great deal of what
Jake rode his horse in thoughtful silence. The outlaw’s violent death didn’t bring him the peace he sought, but it did reinforce his need to return to Texas. With few exceptions, the bodies from the Scarlett Rose were unidentifiable and although the sheriff concluded that Duvall must have perished in the explosion, he wasn’t so sure. Something in the kid’s voice, fear perhaps, made him wonder.
The pleasures of Rapid City were in my sights when I asked Malory to make the 2-hour trip with me.To begin our trip to Rapid, we would get in my cobalt, and drive to the Dupree Cenex to fill up on snacks, drinks, and gas. Mallory would get Root Beer and Pringles. I would get M&M’s and Cherry Sprite. We would get in the car, after we filled it up with gas, put on our favorite music, and truly start the trip.
Moving away from Columbia City and my family will be a change, but I am confident that, just like Janie, leaving my home town will benefit
Women have been discriminated against throughout the history of the United States. Women were typically associated with being “mothers” and having to take care of the children along with other so called home “duties.” They were not allowed to vote until fairly recently. Astonishingly, women in the United States were not allowed to have their own bank account before 1974. There is no reasonable excuse for such restrictions, except to keep women under the control of men. Altogether, the United States’ has a history of discriminating against women. Women have historically been treated as second class citizens, especially in the workplace, which kept them from doing certain jobs that were meant for men. The reality is that women have proven more than capable of doing labor intensive work. World War II proved that women were more than capable of replacing men. Women’s rights in the United States have definitely been improved, but they continue to be discriminated against in the workplace.
The city always seemed to push the stars farther away from the world in the dead of night. Rain had begun to sprinkle downtown and it began to trickle across the top of the parked cars in the street. Vernon was sitting there silently listening to the drizzle outside that sounded like pebbles falling on a tin roof, still thinking about the dreams his been having. The Coffee Cup was like any other diner nestled between apartments and liquor stores. There was seven cut-up stools and behind them against the wall sat a cigarette machine and no smoking sign. The counter was worn from years of service. Two booths sat facing the storefront windows
Joe's Kansas City Bar-B-Que is known for a wide of variety of quality smoked meats. The French fries are fresh, but order them unseasoned unless you want a lot of sodium and spice.

My grandpa was a musician, and he taught my sisters and I how to sing. My grandma was a hula instructor and had her own Halau. She died before I was born, but was the reason my father encouraged us to dance hula. I love dancing because I learn so many stories about our chain of islands and the people that once inhabited it. I used to understand so many more, but my family changed when I was around seven. I still don’t know what it was, but things fell apart. We were no longer as involved with what so many of my childhood memories revolved around. There was less affection and care towards each
I have lived in New Harmony, Indiana since I turned three. New Harmony easily remains one of the smallest towns in the state. Although New Harmony became my hometown, I was born in Indianapolis; it is scary to wonder about who I would be if I had grown up in the largest city in the state rather than here. “Here” being a town with a population of around 800 and one K-12 school with an enrollment of less than 200. This is the atmosphere that I grew up in. By the time I made it through 1st Grade, I was attending all of the basketball games, rooting for the Rappites and belting out the school song. I became New Harmony Rappite down to my bones.
You know the sound of an object cutting through the blaring wind? It is a comforting sound, the constant, swirling motion enveloping you completely. Your mind becomes fuzzy, almost to the point of drifting to sleep. That is when you feel your stomach fall out of place, only to catch up with you again when you pump your legs vigorously.
For the past fourteen years I have lived in San Antonio, an expansive city of over 1.4 million inhabitants from many different cultures. Ranging from authentic Mexican restaurants to the historic Alamo, the attractions of San Antonio offer everything a tourist could ask for. Yet, other aspects of San Antonio have caught my attention over the years; the city seems to possess many contrasts, some more obvious than others. For example, the buildings of San Antonio range from simple brick structures to metal behemoths. Like the small buildings dwarfed by the large structures above them, a seemingly small truth lies hidden in the shadows of San Antonio’s magnanimous culture and beauty. A short distance away from the center of my city’s activity, its downtown, spans the south side of San Antonio, whose cracked streets lack the new shine of the north side’s smooth roads. Over the past few years, I have noticed filthy street dogs, and the occasional rotting carcass, laying in the middle of the road side by side with the homeless who sit under bridges begging. Rather than place emphasis on what has already gained acceptance and appreciation, my mind is drawn to the darker side of my society, which is often dismissed as an unavoidable part of life. These seemingly insignificant aspects of the city have revealed something deeper about myself than what I had previously
Moving is common to do among people, but moving to a different state is nerve wracking. I was sad to know I was leaving my home behind for good. But I was even more excited to see what my future held in Colorado. There was nothing to do in Arizona and no one to hang out with. Moving state is a very important turning point in my life.
After speaking with my grandma about Saint Louis in the past I got a sense that things did change from her time. My grandma use to live in the city for quit sometime. Back then the city was full of life, there were things you could do with your family and stay safe. She moved here when she was 15 from Mississippi to St. Louis Missouri in order to get a better life. When my grandma move here being a person of color she still wasn’t able to go to places because of the color of here skin. An example of this is that she had to move with people of the same skin color. I believe she move into the apartments that was meant to houses lower income people. I kind of wonder what people were thinking when they decide to hate someone simply because of a
Almost forty years later, Claude Fischer contributes his thoughts on urban affect in his article Theories of Urbanism. In this article, Fischer describes three major theories of urbanism that work to transform our behaviors in society and the psychological effects on each individual. The first, he identifies the deterministic theory, which claims that urbanism increases the appearance of social and personality disorders more than those found in rural places. Going with Wirth’s theory on the effect of increased stimuli in the city on individuals, Fischer believed that city dwellers respond by withdrawing from any unnecessary
