Kanye West's Forever: Song Analysis

There have been many impactful songs made in the hip hop era. The amount of great songs made from different artists in the past are innumerable, but only a few have come to stand out and are known for changing the whole hip hop culture. One such impactful track, “Forever,” was produced when four legendary rappers worked together and revolutionized the sound of hip hop. Prior to this collaboration, the rap fan base had a preconceived notion that great artists should not team up because it would take away their ‘street credit’ and make them appear as sellouts. The rap ‘hall of famers’ who created this song are Eminem, Lil Wayne, Kanye West, and Drake. James in many of songs such as, “Gotta Have It”, “New God Flow”, and “Clique.” Comparatively, in this song he takes a unique direction and speaks of his own greatness and how he is overlooked and compares it to the trial and tribulations Lebron James faced in order to obtain greatness. Mr. West’s verse is nothing short of greatness, he starts the verse by stating, “Ever-ever, Mr. West is in the buildin' Ain't no question who about to kill 'em,” saying that he is at the pinnacle of the rap game and he will defeat anyone in the music industry; claiming to be the greatest. Like Mr. James, who is at the top of his game, he will destroy all of his opposition. Kanye also goes on to express his achievements by ending his verse with, “I used to want this shit forever, y’all can have it back,” pretty much summarizing he's tired of the limelight he’s always craved, just as James and doesn't want the spotlight that he always craved for just like how Lebron James has stated numerous times before in his interviews; he doesn’t care for the spotlight as much anymore. Getting Lil Wayne on this song was a shock to everyone, as his is very vocal on his support for Kobe Bryant, who is a rival to Mr. James. However, in a Complex interview he states that he wanted to be part of this massive project, as having this many talented artists on one song was unheard of.
