In 1847, Karl Marx changed the world when he published the Communist Manifesto. He created a brand new political ideology that continues to have dramatic geopolitical effects to this day. Marx is strongly critical of capitalism, and one of his main criticisms of is that capitalism destroys individual freedoms, especially the freedom of artisans to create. Marx laments the destruction of an individual’s freedom to create, and believes that the working class is incapable of generating capital beyond their minimum wage, industrial labor. He says “the average price of wage-labour is the minimum wage, i.e., that quantum of the means of subsistence which is absolutely requisite to keep the labourer in bare existence as a labourer.
What, therefore, the wage-labourer appropriates by means of his labour, merely suffices to prolong and reproduce a bare existence” (Marx 23). Marx wishes for people to be free to build capital for themselves, and see the individual products of one’s labor. Marx tells us “In Communist society, accumulated labour is but a means to widen, to enrich, to promote the existence of the labourer” (Marx 23). There are many examples of craftsman following Marx’s ideals of labor throughout history creating unique and specialized products.
