Once one of the most successful dancers in both American and European theater, Katherine Dunham, a dancer, anthropologist,social activist,and educator, continues to inspire people throughout the world. Named America’s irreplaceable Dance Treasure in 2000. Dunham remains a name heard regularly in dance schools across the world (“Katherine Dunham Biography” 4). She is known for always trying to make a difference and in the process she has become of the world’s greatest humanitarians (Osumare 5). Katherine Dunham’s work in African American rights in the dance world and her creation of new styles of dance makes her an important figure in American dance History.

Genius, confident, and determined are three words that people think of in connection to Katherine Johnson. Many people know that Katherine Johnson was a mathematician, but she was so much more. As a black female mathematician, Katherine Johnson showed the world that women and African Americans were just as smart and capable as white men. She left a legacy as one of the most important people involved with the Space Race. But she wasn’t always trying to stand up for herself. When she was little, she was first being recognized with her talent towards math.

When I was assigned this project I had a hard time choosing an artist. I really do not know much about influential artists so I was pretty lost. I thought I would chose someone everyone knew about like Picasso. But they did not meet the criteria for the artist we were supposed to chose and I would not have a lot to say about them besides the obvious that everyone knew. In this article, “Kentucky Clerk Ordered to Jail for Refusing to Issue Gay Marriage License” the author James Higdon focuses on the recent topic of gay marriage. Higdon’s story relates to a Kentucky woman named Kim Davis. Davis was arrested September 3, 2015 because she refused to issue marriage license to a gay couple. “Under questioning from her attorney, Davis went on to express her opposition to same-sex marriage, which she said was ‘not of God’ and contrary to natural law and therefore not something that she could condone” (Higdon). This quote shows that Davis refused to issue marriage licenses because of her religious beliefs. Davis’s religious beliefs are so strong that she continued to fight with the law and the court judge

Hundreds of protestors are gathering outside of the courthouse either protesting or supporting a Christian woman’s beliefs and actions. Many hold up signs or scream louder than others to declare their personal point of view. Kim Davis is a county clerk in Ashland, Kentucky; has denied numerous marriage licenses for multiple same-sex and straight couples (Smith). This has become a very controversial issue for many and everyone has a different opinion as well. Kim Davis' trial is an influential trial by challenging many of the essential American principles such as morality or ethicality, upholding constitutional rights, and separation of church and state.

Some say she did not break a law and should not be punished for her religious beliefs. Others say that she did break the law since the Supreme Court ruled that same-sex marriage is legal. They also say that she didn't do her job when she refused to sign the marriage licenses.

Katherine Tekakwitha, known to Catholics as St. Kateri Tekakwitha and called by them the “Lily of the Mohawks,” was born at Ossernenon (now Auriesville, New York) in 1656. Her mother, Tagaskouita, was an Alqonquin native American and a Christian. Her father, Kenneronkwa, was a Mohawk chief and followed traditional native practices. She received her given name of “Tekakwitha” (which means “she who bumps into things”) after a bout with smallpox when she was four damaged her eyesight and scarred her face. The epidemic ravaged the Mohawk population around Ossernon until 1663 and claimed both her parents and brother. Tekawitha was adopted by an aunt and her husband, chief of the Turtle clan. The survivors relocated to Caughnawaga (“wild water” in Mohawk) two miles upstream on the Mohawk river.
