Karma Upon Death By Scrabble
Karma. What is karma? Is it a part of life? Is it what helps us make decisions? Or is it the
balance of life and everyone living in it? In Charlie Fish’s story Death By Scrabble karma is the main
theme. This fictional story is about a husband and his wife playing Scrabble, a game in which players
earn points for the words made by them with available letters. The story narrates how the words in the
game reflect the practical life of the

the reader. A big part of irony in the story is how his cousin “Harold swallowed a bee when he was
nine, his throat swelled up and he died.” (page 1) Then towards the end of the story he chokes on a “b”
just like his cousin and dies. The greatest irony in the story is the fact that throughout the whole time the
husband is playing scrabble trying to figure out which words he can spell out to kill his wife, but what he
doesn’t know is that his wife is playing the same game. And ironically she ends up winning. Irony in this
story best illustrates Karma.
Finally the use of these literary terms helped create the theme of this story. The suspense kept
the reader wanting to know what will happen to the wife. will he kill her? Foreshadowing in this story is
also another huge part in showing karma, when he

One of the first literary devices that is easily noticeable is suspense this is it what keeps the reader wanting more. When Al said “You can change history, Jake. Do you understand that? John Kennedy can live.” (King 111). Jake replies with huge doubts, “What if it went wrong?” ……. “What if I managed,……., to stop it from happening and made things worse instead of better? What if I came back
Sergeant Major Morris warns the White family of their dreadful fate, however they do not listen and it makes the story even more suspenseful for readers. The first example of foreshadowing is when Sergeant
Foreshadowing – “ And there was the living room, signs of a struggle. I already knew Amy wasn’t phoning back.”(31) This gives the book a fairly dark twist, suggestion that the wife might be dead, or murdered.
For Example, The author uses suspense, Where you get left on edge, to convey the theme. This is showed in the story by, “And the door slammed shut behind us, leaving us in
People reads books and they get their captured by the suspense the authors use to write their stories. Suspense is a key point for most readers it keeps them reading the book to see what happens next. Both Edgar Allan Poe and Richard Connell are very good authors that use a lot of suspense throughout their short stories. Poe’s “Cask of Amontillado” and Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game” are two stories full of suspense. It’s unpredictable, surprising that we can’t figure out what happens next. .Through conflict, setting, and diction Poe and Connell are able to build suspense.
In “I want a wife,” Judy Brady’s use of irony to add judgment of what a men perspective of women is. The irony is used thought out the essay and how that the author was talking about wanting a wife throughout the essay while being a wife is kind of adding sarcasm, along with irony. The use of irony in this essay help send a
In the short story an example of suspenseful foreshadowing is when Rainsford an extreme animal hunter and his friend Whitney pass Ship-Trap Island. When Whitney questions, ¨A suggestive name isn’t it? Sailors have a curious dread of the place I don’t know why. Some superstition-¨ (Connell 60). Whitney is suggesting something isn't right about Ship-Trap Island. Even the name of the spooky Island gets Whitney anxious because the name of it makes him think the ship they are on will most likely get trapped once they pass the Island. Whitney is worried about what the doubtful Island has in store.
As an instant result, the narrator’s mind operates on false stereotyped images. Case point, based on the name of the blind man’s wife, he assumes that she is a colored woman, and consequently ask his wife if the blind man’s wife is a Negro. In general, the narrator has a mere superficial concept about relationships; for instance, describing the blind man’s relations with his wife the narrator utters: “they’d married, lived and worked together, slept together-had sex, sure-and then the blind man had to bury her.” Also the narrator indicates that he felt, in a pitiful way, sorry for Beulah, the blind man’s wife, as he imagined a woman who could never figure herself from the eyes of her beloved one. In addition, the narrator is unenlightened of the real meaning of actions; this escalates when he labels as pathetic the decision of splitting a twenty-peso Mexican coin between the blind man and his dead
ll great writing has a form of suspense. If you were to ask a random person, they would define it as “anxiety” which, has some properties that deal with suspense. Dictionary.com defines suspense as “ a state or condition of mental uncertainty or excitement, as in awaiting a decision or outcome, usually accompanied by a degree of apprehension or anxiety”. Authors display suspense by adding a weaker character to their writing (“Eleanor and Park” by rainbow Rowell), adding a mishap in their character's life which causes them to have breakdowns (“Perks of Being a Wallflower” by Stephen Chbosky), displaying the reasoning, thoughts, and plans in a story (“The Tell Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe), and putting the characters that are either the main characters or a character that is close to the heart in danger or jeopardy (“The Pedestrian” by Ray Bradbury). In these stories I have claimed to have those specific types of suspense, “The Tell Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe and “The Pedestrian” by
“The Most Dangerous Game”, by Richard Cornell was a story which Mr.Cornell used 8 aspects of fiction to show his point of view that one who has intellect can overcome one who has intelligence or instinct. The character’s used in the story gave the author a way to make his point of view come clear to his audience. The story uses sequence of events. The plot is how the story goes about. The setting is the surroundings of the story, or where it takes place. The suspense is the temporary holding of the information to keep the reading interested, and to keep the reader guessing and wanting to know what will happen so they will continue reading your story. Foreshadowing is the readers way of telling the ‘future’, in other words the writer is

Tension and uncertainty caused by the unknown is the meaning of suspense. In “The Monkey’s Paw” by W.W. Jacobs suspense is found. During “The Monkey’s Paw” by Jacobs suspense is created through setting, irony, and foreshadowing. Much suspense is caused by these story elements.
brilliantly brings out this theme through the use of setting and atmosphere, the title of the story and its
One feature that created suspense in the story was time. In the “Tell-Tale Heart”, time often seemed to speed up or slow down. One example of time movely slowly in the passage is: “I moved slowly-- very, very slowly, so I might not disturb the old man’s sleep”. You almost sense the deliberate movements of narrator. In contrast, the phrase: “The night waned, and I worked hastily, but in silence”, shows that time is advancing quickly; you could almost see the moon vanishing and the narrator’s quick movements. These “time warps” adds suspense, anticipation, and a growing sense of horror to the story and encourages the reader to continue reading.
