Kate Chopin came from a long line of strong women. Many of Kate Chopin’s short stories came from her personal experiences. In some of her short stories Kate Chopin talks about her father’s death, racism, and a respectable woman. “Kate Chopin according to McMahan” was born Kate O’Flaherty in St Louis. When her father died at four years old she was raised by her mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. All of the women she was raised by were all widows. (215) In the story of an hour Kate Chopin talks about a young woman who is trapped in marriage she doesn’t want to be in. The young woman learns that her husband has passed away in a railroad accident. Mrs. Mallard received the news that her husband Brently Mallard was killed in a railroad disaster by her sister and her husband’s friend Richards. (215) They was trying to break the news to her gently because Mrs. Mallard had a very bad heart condition. When she heard the news she cried, she couldn’t believe that her husband was dead. She cried so hard in her sister’s arms. (215) According to Kate Chopin “she sat with her head thrown back upon the cushion of the chair quite motionless, except when a sob came up into her throat and shook her as child who has cried itself to sleep continues to sob in its dreams. (233) That night Mrs. Baroda wanted to tell her husband that she was tempted by his friend Gouvernail but she couldn’t tell him. (234) The next morning Gaston gotten up and had discovered that his wife was gone. Mrs. Baroda had taken an early train to the city and she didn’t want to come home until her husband’s friend was gone.
