In the movie, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey played two actors who try to get each other to fall in love, all for a bet. Kate Hudson as Andie Anderson is a columnist for Composure magazine who writes the “How To” column. Her boss challenges her to pick a guy and has to make common mistakes that women do to drive men away. On the other hand, Matthew McConaughey plays Benjamin Barry who is an ad executive discovering a market he hasn’t represented before. In order to dive into the world of diamonds, his boss encourages him to understand what true love is, so Ben has to make a women fall in love with him over the duration of ten days. Andie and Ben hit it off at a bar and had chemistry ever since. Throughout her ten days, Andie tries every trick in the book to try to get Ben to break up with her, though in a cute non-threatening way. However, Ben is willing to put up with Andie’s stunts to get her to fall in love with him and show her off at the DeLauer’s diamond party to prove he can overcome his task. To describe Andie and Ben’s first interaction, the uncertainty-reduction theory is an appropriate concept in this case. Uncertainty-reduction theory is how we use information as we endeavor to reduce our uncertainty, especially people we aren’t familiar with. In order for one to reduce their uncertainty, they are encouraged to communicate. In the movie, this concept takes place at the bar where the two actors hit it off. Benjamin is sitting
Throughout the first half of Communication 101: Introduction to Human Communication we have been introduced to and discussed a lot of new concepts, ideas, and terms. All of this new material has been pertinent to how humans interact with one another, while also informing us of the why and how behind these interactions as well. The amount of new information we have learned would be impossible to cover and apply to one piece of pop culture, but a lot of what we have learned is relatable to the movie 50 First Dates. This 2004 movie featuring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore features numerous examples of normative relationships and key concepts that we have learned about in class. In this paper I will not only introduce communication terms
Every relationship is based on the foundation of its underlying communication. Besides on a verbal level, the smallest of non-verbal cues, pauses, movements or gestures also determine the construction or destruction of a relationship between two or more people. In the film, Meet The Parents, interpersonal communication is one of the subtly placed themes that revolve around the story. Interpersonal communication can be defined as the reciprocal message processing, when two or more individuals mutually take account of and adjust to one another’s verbal or non-verbal behaviors. The relationship between Greg Focker and Jack Byrnes is one that develops at a gradual pace, though not necessarily always in a
One interesting fact that I have noticed deals with the movie When a Man Loves a Woman, the meetings the heroine of the movie is saddened by the fact that she is no longer the same person, she was while she was drinking. She is no longer as much fun, or no longed as interesting as she once was. Many of the people at the "real meeting" expressed the same concern, that the fun life is no longer fun, and they are not the same people as they once were.
Firstly, Uncertainty reduction theory was written by Charles Berger, his theory focus on the way human predict and interact to others. His theory focused on two types of uncertainty and eight Atoms for uncertainty. According to Charles Uncertainty reduction theory is an increased knowledge of what kind of person another is, which provides an improved forecast of how a future interaction will turn out. In another word mean that communication is the key to form health relationship. As human we communicate to generally understand one another and to also reduction our uncertainty. I can apply uncertainty reduction theory to my love life, my first day at a new school, making new friends and meeting new people, new location, and I can also apply uncertainty reduction theory to my first job interview, and many other situation to my life.
From the 1830’s to the 1860’s, a group of idealistic philosophers known as the American Transcendentalists spread their new and unique beliefs across the nation. Some well-known influential thinkers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Margaret Fuller, and many others introduced the philosophical social movement that established due to rationalist thoughts. These thinkers focused on being one with nature and the divine. After these ideas flourished in the mid-1800’s, individuals from the 20th and 21st century such as Christopher Smith and Christopher McCandless have also taken part of the Transcendentalist ideas. However, transcendentalist ideas seem to backfire than succeed in these modern day cases.
The Uncertainty Reduction Theory states that before and during initial interactions between two people, one's first instinct is to reduce uncertainty about the other through various methods. For example, when you see someone you think you would like to know, you try and figure out what they are like through various methods so you can control the conversation and steer it into a path that the other person finds interesting.
It is impossible to get through life without communicating. Better interpersonal communication skills help us success in different aspects of our life. He’s just not that into you is the movie that I will analyze. In this movie, there are nine main characters and they live intertwine with one another either by being a friend, a couple, friend of a friend. In this paper, I will explore how Gigi is using interpersonal communication on the evolution of personal relationship; and how she applies better communication skills in her relationship with others. Terms that I will apply and analyze in the films are: Perception, stereotype, mind reading, prototype, verbal communication, and the ambiguous of language, the abstract of language,
Uncertainty reduction theory is “the point of view that uncertainty motivates communication and that certainty reduces the motivation to communicate” (Wood, definition). This theory was first developed by Charles Berger. He believed that when people are to meet for the first time they have a high level of uncertainty and the only way for them to reduce it is to communicate with one another. “They don’t know what each other likes, thinks and believes; how each other responds to certain reactions, and they’re unsure what each other expects or wants from interacting” (Wood,184). There are three prior conditions that are meant to help individuals want to reduce uncertainty.
The people I admire most in performing arts are Taraji P. Henson and Janelle Monáe. I admire these women most because they are strong actors. You çan tell that they love there job of being a actor. They both stared in the movie Hidden Figures that received a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance. The Satellite Award for Best Cast in a Motion Picture and NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Motion Picture.
“Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it is better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring.”-Marilyn Monroe, she proved that to the world. Marilyn was a mysterious young woman who changed the world by being proud of her curvy body. Following in her footsteps was Anna Nicole Smith, Marilyn was her biggest idol, she even looked exactly like her. Marilyn Monroe and Anna Nicole Smith, two of beautiful, memorable, confident Hollywood Icons amazed the world with their individuality, talent, and accomplishments.
When it comes to talking about theories of communication, it is easy to overlook the impact they have on our day-to-day lives. Often times when people think of theories they think of long boring explanations that have little meaning or pertinence to their lives. This, however, is not always the case. It may surprise some to find out that the interactions they have whether at work, with their loved ones, or even with a stranger all relate back to theories that explain why they do the things they do. This not only includes the face-to-face interaction we have in real life, but also through the relationships we see portrayed in television shows and movies. An example of this is how the uncertainty reduction theory plays into the relationship development between Belle and the Beast in the newest movie version of Beauty and the Beast.
Katey Sagal was born January 19 in Los Angeles, California, to show business parents who would eventually have five children. She attended the California Institute of the Arts. Ben got fucked over by his last Dominant/boyfriend (stole money, identity fraud) so he ends up moving in with his best friend of 10 years, Jake. Jake's a Dom, and straight (Ben thinks). Jake ends up breaking up with his girlfriend and the two men "jokingly" fall into a house-sub sort of situation. What Ben doesn't know if Jake's not straight, he's bi, and now he's falling for Ben. With some help from Tilly and the gang, they end up admitting what they feel for each other, and get married,
Uncertainty reduction theory could be applied to long-term relationships as well as initial encounter (Berger, 1979). Berger presented that uncertainty may happen on two different levels: behavioral and cognitive. He stated that reducing uncertainty in behavior increases the predicting ability of how a person will act when he/she is facing a situation. In the mean time, cognitive uncertainty affects the ability to explain the main rational reasons for that certain action.
The 1920s was a period of change and reform in many things ranging from entertainment, consumerism, and fashion. Fashion, one of the greatest changes in the 1920s was influenced by designers such as Coco Chanel, Jean Patou, Clara Bow, also known as the “It Girl” all influenced fashion for both women and men in the 20s. Previously, women had to behave polite and modestly and had to wear long dresses down to the ankles. But some women started to go past those social boundaries that were set by society. These women would go to speakeasies and smokes in public. The women who did these things are referred to as flappers. Men and some women saw flappers as a disgrace and were disgusted by their way of living. Slowly, as the years began to pass, women such as Coco Chanel, Jean Patou, and Clara Bow came into the fashion and entertainment industry changing the fashion and women’s ideas.
