In Katherine Brush’s short story, “The Birthday Party,” a wife plans a small surprise for her husband, but this seemingly joyful scene takes a sour turn. Brush utilizes connotation, tone, and point of view shift in order to illustrate the harsh oppression women in the 1940s suffered within their household.

Brush exposes this devastating reality through the use of connotation. For example, she writes, “...it suddenly became obvious that this was an Occasion--in fact, the husband’s birthday, and the wife had planned a little surprise for him.” In the quote, the word “occasion” means a once-in-a-lifetime event in which the wife can do something for her husband to be content with her. It sounds as if the wife was never allowed to plan or do anything on her own. The emphasis on the word “occasion” makes it evident that the wife never leaves the house or is never allowed to, unless the husband turns another year. …show more content…

For example, she states, “...the wife beamed with shy pride over her little surprise...It became clear at once that help was needed because her husband was not pleased.” As seen in the quote, the writer has a sympathetic yet helpless tone. The tone helps transmit the feelings of a woman in the 1940s. The author uses her tone to illustrate the thoughts women had during this time. During this period, women are feeling sympathy for each other’s voiceless nightmares, but fail to speak out because they are helpless.
