Although hunger is an ongoing problem that will never stop, lots of kids and teens are coming up with simple yet helpful organizations to help the hungry. Katie Stagliano started her organization Katie’s Krop’s at the age of nine. It all started when she was given a cabbage seedling to grow, Katie tended for it over a few days an d ended with a 40 pound cabbage. She decided to donate her cabbage to the soup kitchen and it fed 275 people. Eager to continue helping, Katie started growing gardens all over the US (100) that people of all ages can come and help plant and harvest fresh produce to donate to the soup kitchens. Because of her hard work she has helped donate thousands of pounds of fresh produce to soup kitchens all across the country.

Another example she mentioned is warehouses for hope, where food aid comes in every year when people are starving during the lean seasons. Instead of giving out food, they give it to food banks where the village manages these warehouses during lean season and takes the food out for people who are in need. Also, during harvest, they do the opposite by putting it back with food interest. This was very successful because for the past two years, 500 of these villages did not need any food aid because of how self-sufficient they are, and their food banks were growing as
Jillian Armenante is a prominent American television and film actress. She is best-known for playing the role of Donna Kozlowski on the TV shows Judging Amy.
Considering the following statistics, it is clear why Hunger Free Colorado’s work is so important: Nearly 1 in 7 Coloradans struggled with hunger in 2013, facing times when there was not enough money to buy food for their families or themselves (Colman-Jenson, Gregory, & Singh, 2013). More than 1 in 5 Colorado households with children (22%) reported food hardship, facing financial challenges to put food on the table (Food Research and Action Center, 2013). More than 1 in 8 Coloradans lived in poverty, including 1 in 6 kids, during 2013 (Bishaw & Fontenot, 2014).
Inter-Faith Food Shuttle (IFFS) is a $14.5 million nonprofit that uses a holistic approach to address and end hunger in the Research Triangle Region of North Carolina. IFFS believes that hunger is an issue that can be solved by, “creating sources of healthy food in every low-income neighborhood and grow opportunities for people to provide for themselves by learning job skills or growing their own food.” The pillars of this approach are feeding, teaching, and growing. (IFFS, 2016)
Pune is the 9th most populous city in India with a population of over 3 lakh, there are many homeless people too. According to recent survey by Pune Municipal Corporation there are 854 people living and sleeping on footpaths in the city. “Feed the hungry” organization feeds hungry homeless people with quality food twice a week. Feed the Hunger is a non profit organization that was formed in 2010 by group of senior citizens: Prem Coelho, Keshav and Meena Pinto. Prem Coelho got the idea first; when she shared with her group of friends they all agreed and are happy to work for this. Initially it just started with three members and used to feed the hungry on every Tuesday i.e., once in a week. Then many people started volunteering the organization. Now its completely a team of 20 members divided
Serving as an advisory board to the nonprofit, the No Kid Hungry Leadership Council works in tandem with the board of directors, to assist them with strategic planning in an effort to expand the nonprofit’s influence among companies, other nonprofits, foundations and personal donors. Advisory boards like this one do not possess any of the legal duties or governance as the Board of Directors do. Instead the advisory board consists of key stakeholders who through their knowledge and experience in the food industry are able to provide expert advice on how the Board of Directors should conduct the nonprofit’s programs (Worth, 2013). Additionally, the No Kid Hungry Leadership Council also heads the nonprofit’s advocacy efforts by generating awareness about hunger in the country and engaging with policy makers. By utilizing their diverse membership of leaders from the business, charity, communication, and political sectors, the council is able to conduct strategic advocacy efforts for Share Our Strength (Share Our Strength, n.d.). The tactical relationship of all of these elements- the board of directors, executive leadership, advisory board and the role of the CEO- is the product of such a balanced organizational
Hunger and malnutrition is the number one health risk stopping the mental development of children. One in eight people goes to bed hungry every night with 850 million people around the world not having enough food to be healthy and lead an active life (World Vision, 2015). For our health promoting activity we created posters and hung them in the five sub-schools (Appendix 1). This has helped to educate many of the year 8’s and 9’s on this topic. We also sent many people a survey which gave us insight into what people knew and also gave us a way of educating more people (Appendix 2). Another thing we did to educate people was by creating a website with information about the foundation and a link to the World Vision website where people can donate to the cause (Appendix 3). By educating people on this topic we have expanded their knowledge on the cause. More people will be able to participate and donate to the cause knowing that they will be helping many people around the world. Other ways to promote this organisation can be creating a Facebook page, raising money, having guest speakers, handing out brochures and creating a petition. These people will also be able to raise more awareness themselves and educate many other
In conclusion, hunger in America is at an all time high due to poverty and the economy. The increasingly high number of starving children has gone up over the past years and needs to be stopped. There are government programs set up to help stop hunger in American, such as, SNAP Food Stamps and WIC. We can get involved by volunteering with Feeding America or other non-for-profit organizations set for feeding the hungry. Food donations and monetary donations have always been a great way to help out for those who don’t have the time to donate.
The city where I live, Eugene, has a large homeless population. Furthermore, giving money to sign bearers on the street corners is imprudent, as funds may be abused. Fortunately, there are many shelters and food distribution centers to assist the homeless with concrete results. To contribute to these efforts, I volunteer at the Food for Lane County food bank because I believe supporting the poor is essential in a conscientious society and feel responsible for giving back to my community. As a food sorter, I spend time inspecting donated food to ensure it is safe for consumption and organizing it into specific categories to ease distribution. This is one of the first steps in a supply chain that sustains homeless and underprivileged families.
I think Project Bread is a great way to raise awareness of hunger; a lot of people don’t realize that many people starve because they can’t afford to buy
It isn't very often that you find an initiative that involves every facet of the community. Yet tucked away in the halls of Brookwood High School you'll find students and teachers striving to do just that. In their March to a Million effort, Brookwood High School is taking part in an effort to end hunger for the second year in a row. The school is participating in Empty Bowls, a grassroots campaign that has been raising money to end hunger in the US for over 25 years.
The work I have done at the Food Bank it is makes the community a better and safe place. Even though my group in the food bank makes posters and advertisements instead of packaging food to the needs people, with our posters, we create awareness among the people in the community of the resources available. Without our posters, the people who are in need wouldn’t know where to turn to when they’re hungry. In a way, I would like to think that we didn’t just create posters; we created support and the comfort of knowing the Food Bank is right there on the main campus just in case anybody needed it. As a matter of fact, a woman who couldn’t afford food for her family of five kids, came to the Food Bank the other day for help after seeing the signs
Hunger is a very real problem in poverty stricken nations around the world, but we don't always combat this problem in the way we should. In most cases we donate food to be distributed for free or at a reduced cost in poverty stricken areas, and while this does provide food, it can also hurt the local economy. Most jobs in impoverished nations are in agriculture, so sending cheap food makes it harder for the farmers to sell their product. In order to combat hunger in these areas without hurting the local economy, the answer is not to send in more competitively priced food, the answer is to use the food that is already there. I propose that support organizations instead of asking for food donations, ask for money. They could then use the money
In my home town they have started two very well known organizations that were designed to help the children in the community. These two organizations are known as Kids First and WeCare. The heads of these organizations hold silent auctions, radio auctions, and clothes and food drives to donate to families within the community who are not able to afford to purchase these items on their own budgets.
