Chapter 1: Katniss wakes up on the morning of the reaping to find that her little sister, Prim, has moved to their mother’s bed in the middle of the night. Katniss rises from bed and gets dressed. She grabs her forage bag and retrieves a piece of goat cheese that Prim has left for her under a bowl. Katniss’s family lives in the part of District 12 known as the Seam. Today is reaping day, and the reaping itself doesn’t take place until two, so the streets are empty. Katniss’s father taught her how to use a bow before he died in a mining accident five years ago, when Katniss was eleven. She still has nightmares about her father’s death, however, and wakes up screaming for him to run. Trespassing in the woods is illegal, and is punishable by death, but most of the Peacekeepers turn a blind eye because they enjoy the fresh meat that comes out of hunting. …show more content…
As she grew older, Katniss learned that this would only cause more trouble, so now she avoids engaging in anything other than small talk. She even avoids discussing her opinions at home, where Prim might hear her and start repeating her words.The only person Katniss feels that she can truly be free with is her hunting partner, Gale. Katniss knows she has to really wow them with her skilled bow and arrow shooting. The Gamemakers start to not pay attention to her so she decides she need to act.

As Rue is doing this Katniss speaks to Rue, “I’d have thought, in District Eleven, you’d have a bit more to eat than us. You know, since you grow the food” (Collins 202). Katniss has always struggled to provide food and thinks since district eleven is agriculture they get more food. Rue replies “Oh, no, we’re not allowed to eat the crops.” She continues “They whip you and make everyone else watch" (Collins 202).

In the novel The Hunger Games Katniss Everdeen has to dig deep down to find strength and courage. Katniss is not your average girl. She has a great shot with a bow and arrow, but also has a very audacious mind. Ever since Katniss’s father died in a mine explosion she has been the provider for her family, which consist of her mother and her younger sister Prim. Katniss has to be trained by Haymitch, who is a victor of the Hunger Games. The challenge with Haymitch is that he is always drunk and does not have his mind straight.
Katniss was always very close to her little sister Prim. Prim meant the world to her and she always did her best to protect her. Katniss loved Prim so much that she even put her own life before hers when she “stepped up to take Prim’s place”(24) as tribute. Katniss’ father was a very influential on her. He taught her how the woods could provide for her but also that they could be dangerous. Even after he had died he was still important to her. After her dad past, Katniss’ mother became drastically depressed and was unable to provide for her children. Katniss never truly forgave her for abandoning them in their time of need. Due to the lack of resources district, twelve has, Katniss must illegally hunt and sell her finding in a Black Market to keep herself and family alive. The bourgeoisie does not see the struggle that Katniss and others like her go through. Members of the bourgeoisie like Effie Trinket, see the lower income district tributes as children to pity before their death in the Hunger Games.
In the novel The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, the main character and protagonist is 16 year old Katniss Everdeen, a strong and selfless young woman who is far more mature than her age suggests. As the main provider for her family after her father died, Katniss had to become responsible and resourceful at a young age, which forced her to participate in rebellious behavior in order to keep her family alive.
