Katniss Everdeen: A Dystopian Novel

In the novel, The Hunger Games written by Suzanne Collins is a dystopian young adult book that is based in Panem that is divided into twelve districts. Each year the districts have to send a boy and a girl into an arena to fight to the death. The novel’s protagonist is Katniss, who lives in the poorest district. Katniss makes the audience think of the important ideas of bravery, societal class and love.

This book shows the life of Katniss Everdeen after winning the Hunger Games an event that is sponsored by the Capital, where children are put into an arena to fight and kill each other to survive, and how her life was affected while in the games and after as well. She also has to relive the horrors of the games because her and Peeta Mellark fellow winner of the games have to go on the Victory Tour around all the districts so the Capitol can keep the terror of the games alive. Then later it is announced that, “‘on the seventy-fifth anniversary… the male and female tributes will be reaped from their existing pool of victors’”(Collins 175) which meant that Katniss and Peeta along with the other victors would have to go back into the Hunger Games again and fight to win. The book is set in a futuristic place called Panem. Which according the website Shmoop.com Panem is “...a country that - after a series of vague disasters - rose from the ashes of North America… [and] it’s all pretty post-apocalyptic”(Shmoop Editorial Team) where people are put into different districts. Every year, each district selects tributes to test their mental, physical, and emotional strength in a competition known as the Hunger Games. The Capitol’s purpose is to broadcast the tournament as entertainment and to reinforce the government's total power. When Katniss’s younger sister, Prim, is chosen as one of District 12's tribute, Katniss volunteers to take her spot. She trains under an always-inebriated former Hunger Games champion Haymitch Abernathy, played by Woody Harrelson, to hone her killer instincts. Now, in order to remain alive the tournament and be crowned the Hunger Games victor, this young warrior must put all of her ability to the ultimate test.

The story takes place in Panem during an unknown time period in a post-apocalyptic world. Panem is the only nation that exists in this world and it is located mainly in North America. Panem is comprised of 12 districts (13 before 1 was destroyed) and a capitol. The capitol is located in where the Rocky Mountains used to be and it is where the annual Hunger Games takes place, while the districts are scattered around Panem. The culture is very diverse as the citizens include a bit of every ethnic background. In this world, the rich live lavishly and wastefully while the poor are struggling to get by. The laws in this society are extremely harsh as the death penalty exists for trivial matters such as entering the wood, a forbidden area, and the value of human life is very low as the capitol forces 24 kids to fight to the death annually. The story begins in district 12 the poorest district in Panem, where Katniss and Peeta return after winning the 74th Hunger Games.

In the Hunger games, Katniss Everdeen must journey alongside Peeta Mellark in an arena where they must fight till death with 11 other districts till 1 remains, while also weighing survival and love. As we follow Katniss’s journey, we see how she has proven her way to be a traditional hero. Katniss's "Call to adventure" comes with the start of the 74th annual Hunger Games. Katniss and her sister prim rose make their way to the "reaping" where 1 girl and 1 boy are chosen to compete. As they anxiously wait, Prim rose is drawn for district 12. Katniss can’t bare to see her sister face such a grim fate, Katniss automatically volunteers to take her place in the games, district 12’s very first volunteer as tribute. Peeta Mellark, is called as district 12’s male tribute, Katniss remembers the first time she saw him after her father's death, peeta gave her bread that was well needed.

Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games is a complex character who epitomizes the archetype of a hero, however, she also shatters the mold by rebelling against the capital and endangering her whole family. She starts out as a hero to her family, especially her sister, and then becomes the symbol of strength to everyone. Katniss sacrifices herself by volunteering to join the Hunger Games in place of her sister, it is a game of survival where a boy and a girl from each district are forced to fight the other members of other districts to the death. By going out of her ordinary world and preparing to join a game where her life could be taken, she fits right into the archetype of a hero. Her bow and arrow, the weapon that only she can wield, will be the only things to help her survive. Despite these heroic qualities, Katniss makes an erroneous decision and blunder mistakes that shows the reader the flip side of Katniss.

This novel is narrated from first person point of view, Katniss Everdeen, a young-adult protagonist from District 12. The novel begins with a reaping ceremony, in which tributes for the Hunger Games were selected from each district. District 12 is surrounded by electrified fences to keep away from wild animals however it is just “another reason to keep [people] inside the fence of District 12” (Collins,p.185). Nature is used against the populace to keep them under surveillance. The Capitol holds the power to segregate and judge its subjects while the populace are too scared and incapable to reflect and question on their conditions, and as a result they have little or no agency over the system that governs them. Here we find Katniss in 12, they are ruled by the capitol and its president Snow. This society keeps peace by having a drawing in each district for tributes a male and female from the ages of twelve to eighteen. The tributes which Katniss is one, are then put in an arena and they fight to the death for all to see on tv, until only one is left alive.
