Katniss Everdeen endured more challenges and difficulties than just fighting in the Hunger Games. Katniss faced the horrible challenge of overcoming her father’s death and leading on the family. Katniss was basically the leader in the family, so I believe volunteering as tribute for her sister, Primrose, was a dramatic challenge. Mental challenges were also faced in Katniss’s head; like how she was part of the cause why Rue and Thresh died. There are many reasons why I believe these were the most grueling challenges for Katniss Everdeen. The death of Katniss’s father forced Katniss to take over and provide for the Everdeen family, which is surely a difficult challenge. I feel like this was a mental and physical challenge for Katniss. On page two hundred and nine, Katniss thinks in her head, “The warmth of Rue at my side, her head cradled on my shoulder, have given me a sense of security. I realize for the first time, how very lonely I’ve been in the arena.” This comforts her, Rue gave Katniss special feelings inside her heart that nobody could take away from them. When Rue died Katniss said she was determined to avenge Rue, and show the capitol that Rue was more than just a piece of their games. After Thresh had died, Katniss thought in her head, “Rue was one thing. We were allies. She was young. But no one will understand my sorrow for Thresh’s murder.” Katniss feels that district eleven needs to be avenged. That is a challenge Katniss makes for herself. These feelings make Katniss realize more what the game is. Katniss knows that they think Rue and Thresh are both just “pieces,” the capitol is messing with Katniss.
