In a dystopian world, in the former United States, now called Panem, there is a girl named Katniss Everdeen who is a great archer and huntress. She lives in poverty with her mother and sister in the twelfth out of twelve districts. The day she wakes up is called “Reaping day”. It's the day where all the children in each district gather up for one boy and one girl to be chosen for “The Hunger Games”. The games take the two chosen from each of the twelve districts and make them compete in an arena to fight to the death until only one remains. Katniss’ sister is one of the unlucky called, and Katniss volunteers to take her place so her sister doesn't get killed. Soon after, a boy gets picked. The boy chosen was named Peeta. Katniss and Peeta
I chose to the modern mythology known as The Hunger Games a novel written by Suzanne Collins and later adapted into a feature film. The novel was actually part of a trilogy The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay. The story begins by introducing you to our main character Katniss Everdeen who lives in a world run by the Capitol where President Snow resides and has enforced a form of martial law on all 13 districts. Every year the Capitol hosts their annual Hunger Games which is a form of entertainment for the Capitol. Out of every district two tributes, one boy and one girl will be picked to participate in the Hunger Games which is a battle to the death. Whichever tribute manages to survive till the end will be rewarded by getting to stay in the capitol and their district will be given more food and supplies. The reason Katniss becomes a part of the games is because her little sister prim is chosen during the reaping to be the tribute so Katniss hearing her sisters name volunteers as tribute to save her sisters life but she tries to win the games for her district and to provide for them. The only problem is she finds it hard to murder the other tributes because they are all so young and she doesn’t see why she must kill them for the Capitols entertainment.
Given these symptoms (examples above) and the fact that they have lasted more than year can help us determine the Katniss Everdeen is suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The criterion from DSM-5 on PTSD has also helped in determining the correct diagnosis for Katniss. The traumatic event that lead Katniss to develop PTSD was that she was forced to survive by killing foes and comrades alike. Too often she was placed in situations that were either to kill or be killed by other tributes. Situations like those escalated the risk of becoming another survivor of PTSD. As previously mentioned, the symptoms have lasted more than a year and therefore, has created significant distress on Katniss's emotional, cognitive, physical, and social
Each year there is one male and one female chosen from each district to participate in the annual Hunger Games. Prime, Katniss, Gale, and Peeta are all from district 12 and when the time comes to pick a participant, Prime, Katniss’s sister is chosen. Katniss then volunteers to take over for her beloved sister, and Peeta is chosen from the boys side. They are then rushed to the capital to start their training for the games. Peeta works at the bakery so he is good at camouflage and throwing heavy things. Katniss if very good at archery and with a bow. Their job is to get sponsors while they are at the capital. When they go in to be evaluated, Katniss shocks the sponsors by shooting an arrow into the apple in a man’s hand when they underestimated her. That earned her a very high evaluation score and more sponsors. Peeta then claims to have a crush on Katniss in hopes of making her look more desirable to get more sponsors as well. While being pitted against tributes that have trained for this for their entire lives, people from the capital and all over are watching the games on a television. Katniss relies on her ability to shoot a bow and knowledge of hunting while hiding from the
Every year a competition is held where one girl and one boy, ages 12-18, from each District is chosen for a game of survival. The last tribute alive, wins riches and lots of food. These games are called The Hunger Games. Katniss Everdeen is from the poorest District, 12. She shows survival every single day of her life. Everyday she hunts, illegally, to supply for her family because her father died when she was young. Going into the games was no different. During a conversation with Peeta he says, “You know what my mother said? She said ‘District 12 might finally have a winner,’ but she wasn't talking about me. She was talking about you.” Because everybody knew how good she was at surviving, District 12 got a little bit of faith. He is saying that even his mom believed more in her than in him, because she had experience in survival and he, as a baker’s son, did not. This shows the audience that despite hardships and losses a human has the ability to overcome and do whatever it takes to survive. Katniss shows a strong relationship with her sister. After Prim, her sister, is drawn for the games she volunteers and goes into the games to protect her sister. Throughout the movie any decision that Katniss makes, is made with the thought of Prim. During an interview with Caesar Flickerman, he
In this novel, Katniss who possesses the ability to hunt with great ease and knowledge, is called to save her sister Prim's life, when she is announced as a tribute. When two people chosen from each district are to participate as ‘tributes’ in the Hunger Games, Katniss does something completely unheard of for
The Hunger Games takes place in the future where the nation is divided into 12 districts. Every year two young individuals are chosen from each distract to fight in the hunger games which was made up because many years ago the districts had a rebellion against the capital and lost so they set up the hunger games to show that they have control. The tributes are chosen by a raffle, one boy and one girl. This year Peeta, a baker’s son and 16 years old Katniss Everdeen’s younger sister, Prim, are both chosen. The games are set up so everyone in each district can watch all the tributes fight to their deaths. For the first time ever seen, Katniss volunteers to take Prim’s place in the games. Many wonder, what would have occurred in the games if Katniss did not volunteer for her sister.
During the reaping, Katniss sister Primrose Everdeen gets elected. However, surprisingly Katniss volunteers herself to take over her sister's place in the reaping. During, The Hunger Games each tribute has to fight for survival, finding water, shelter, food, and most of all for their own life. Throughout The Games, each tribute is being televised live. Every citizen of each district is obligated to watch these violent brutal fights until the end.
“We had to save you because you're the Mockingjay, Katniss, says Plutarch. While you live, the revolution lives” (Collins). Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games is a complex character who epitomizes the archetype of a hero, however, she also shatters the mold by rebelling against the capital and endangering her whole family. She starts out as a hero to her family, especially her sister, and then becomes the symbol of strength to everyone. Katniss sacrifices herself by volunteering to join the Hunger Games in place of her sister, it is a game of survival where a boy and a girl from each district are forced to fight the other members of other districts to the death. By going out of her ordinary world and preparing to join a game where her life could be taken, she fits right into the archetype of a hero. Her bow and arrow, the weapon that only she can wield, will be the only things to help her survive. Despite these heroic qualities, Katniss makes an erroneous decision and blunder mistakes that shows the reader the flip side of Katniss.
In The Hunger Games the main character, Katniss Everdeen, is forced to grow-up at a young age. Her father died in an explosion years earlier and left Katniss to become virtually the sole provider for her family that consist of her younger sister Prim, and her mother. When her father died her mother became distant and stopped working forcing Katniss to step up and fill that role for the sake of her sister. She started hunting, gathering, and selling food at the black market. These skills would later help her in the Hunger Games after she volunteered to take Prim’s place after her name was drawn in the reaping. Along with Katniss, Peeta ( a baker's son that helped Katniss after her father died) is chosen to participate in the games. After the
In the beginning, Katniss is living the hard life of her district. She goes to school and hunts so that her family has food. She has a younger sister named Prim and a mother, however it is time for the reaping which is when the Capitol picks names out of a bucket for one boy and one girl from each of the 12 districts to participate in the Hunger Games, a fight to the death tournament where the winner gets fame and fortune. Prim gets chosen to participate in the games, but Katniss volunteers to take her place(22). A boy from their district named Peeta also gets chosen and Katniss realizes that he had given her bread when she didn’t have food for her family. They go to the Capitol and meet their mentor, Haymitch(56), who helps them train, then they go into the arena and battle. Peeta joins up with some Careers, children that trained for the Hunger Games all their lives, and tries to win but then he betrays them. The Gamemakers make a rule change and say that two tributes from the same district can win together so Katniss finds Peeta and helps him because he has been injured. After they are the only two people left the Gamemakers change the rule back to force Katniss and Peeta to fight each other, rather than fight, Katniss takes some poisonous berries, called Nightlock, she found in the arena and gives half of
It was reaping day when the novel began Katniss and gale where hunting in the forest to bring food on to there family’s table since there fathers have died in the seam. Katniss hated the dystopic capital called panam for there un fairness to the other twelve district. and every year on reaping day they take two tribute to fight in a battle to the death as a “reminder of district thirteen and how they destroyed it because they rebelled against panam.at the moment of the reaping Effie pulls out the female tribute name Katniss sister prim was chosen so her sister volunteered to take her place in the games. For the male tribute peeta was chosen a boy who loved Katniss and was very generous to give a loaf of bread which she could never afford. They had three days to train before the game .Hamish knew
Modern day women owe their strides in feminism to Artemis, the original feminist from Ancient Greek mythology. Throughout time, feminism has taken on different forms and has evolved somewhat. To many, males and females alike, feminism is just women wanting attention, when in reality, it is more complex and involves so much more than just the need to be in the spotlight. “The Woman’s Bible is an example of a work of criticism firmly in this school, looking beyond the more obvious male-centered outlook and interpretation” (Napikoski Web). Artemis, goddess of the hunt and youth, and Katniss Everdeen, the hero from the film The Hunger Games (2012), are connected by a feminist independence and a desire to protect that proves feminism is an ancient concept.
The day of reaping was a day all districts feared. It is a reminder to all twelve districts that the capitol hold the power over us, that they own us, that they control us. When I heard my name called I didn’t know what to think. The fact that my life was practically over and that out of every boy in the district I was chosen to compete in the games made me so mad. The odds were not in my favour. But I knew I had to be brave, for my family and for my district. Standing next to Katniss on stage at the day of the reaping was the worst feeling in the world. Knowing we had chance at survival. But thanks to our generous sponsers and our mentor Haymitch, Katniss and I remain standing here
The presence of true female bravery in many novels and films was very rare, however, the release of the series, ‘The Hunger Games’, has begun the start of the typical female protagonist, by introducing the confident character, Katniss Everdeen. The film focuses on the protagonist of the film, Katniss Everdeen, a 16 year old girl that lives in the poor District 12, which is located in the apocalyptic land Panem. This essay will analyse views towards film heroes, and the protagonist in the film, by recognising gender stereotypes, traditions, values, and beliefs to relate to modern society. In the typical western tradition, the heroes in the films are typically male and reinforce the values of the typical western society, the heroes in the films normally follow a set pattern, and this is relatable to Joseph Campbell’s
The reaping begins and Prim’s name is drawn. Katniss freaks out and volunteers to take her place, making her District 12’s girl tribute. The boy tribute’s name is drawn and it’s Peeta Mellark, who is the baker’s son and the same age at Katniss. Katniss remembers, when they were children, Peeta saw her starving outside in the rain and gave her a burnt piece of bread that his mother had told him to feed to their pigs. Katniss wonders how is she supposed to kill him in the Games after he was so
