Katniss Everden Is a Girl Ith Many Talents

Katniss is the protagonist of the novel. She is a tough, self-sufficient, extremely loyal girl whose childhood was cut short by responsibility. After her father died, her mother sank into a deep depression, so it was up to Katniss to feed the family. One evening, she was going through others' trash in desperation when Peeta Mellark purposefully burned bread from his family's bakery and gave it to her. She feels like she owes him for that action, because after that she realizes the forest will be how to feed her family. She and her friend Gale regularly hunt wild game and gather food, selling some and keeping some for their families. Katniss dearly loves her younger sister Prim, so much so that she volunteers to go to the Hunger Games in Prim's place. Though Katniss could very easily feel bitter towards her more sheltered sister, instead she is fiercely protective of her. During the Games, this protectiveness transfers to another young tribute named Rue who Katniss grows very close too and mentors as she were an older sister to Rue.

In the novel The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, the main character and protagonist is 16 year old Katniss Everdeen, a strong and selfless young woman who is far more mature than her age suggests. As the main provider for her family after her father died, Katniss had to become responsible and resourceful at a young age, which forced her to participate in rebellious behavior in order to keep her family alive. She is an unselfish and protective character, putting herself in danger in order to keep the ones she loves safe, especially for her little sister Primrose. The composer Suzanne Collins of ‘The Hunger Games’ demonstrates that Katniss is a good hero through her courageous qualities. This is evident through this quote “how could I leave prim, who is the only person in the world I am certain I love” (chapter 1 page 11). Katniss demonstrates loving and having lots of courage through volunteering pushing her sister and taking her place proving this is seen through these words “who is the only person in the world I am certain I love”. The effect of emotive language and short sentences making us feel the emotion of katniss like we are there and can hear her. We can hear through these effect s that katniss doesn't think about what going to happen next only caring about prims safety. Throughout this book we can see that katniss has a lot of other qualities.

District 12 is one of the troublesome places to live, especially where Katniss does, the ‘Seam’ as they have named it. The novel is about Katniss who selflessly volunteers for her sister to compete in the 74th annual Hunger Games for all of Panem to watch. Throughout this novel, this character has so many secrets that she keeps to herself and lies so that no one can know about her. There are 3 distinct traits that she has. The Hunger Games is a series of adventure novels written by Suzanne Collins. The novels are the Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay. However, the movie of Mockingjay was split into two parts. In 2015, Mockingjay’s second part came out. As for me, I prefer to watch the first one.

Throughout the training process preceding the Games, both her mentor, Haymitch Abernathy and her designer, Cinna give her advice to make an impression on the crowd. Initially Haymitch was quite hostile towards Katniss and when it came to advice on winning the games he advised sarcastically “here’s some advice, stay alive.” this made Katniss hesitant to taking further guidance from her mentor. Later he gave her helpful direction to which would definitely win one with the crowd, suggesting she and Peeta portray themselves as “The star-crossed lovers.” Even though she did not truly love Peeta, she reluctantly carried this facade right till the end of the Games. Katniss felt a connection with her designer Cinna as soon as she met him as he was the only ‘normal’ person in the Capitol. Feeling comfortable talking to him, she explained that she was finding it difficult to act in a way that was appealing to the audience and Cinna suggested “Why don't you just be yourself.” This reminded Katniss that she did have to be what the Capitol wanted her to be, that she could win their hearts and the Hunger Games by being herself. The ability to go against her own desires to follow the advice of those with more experience than herself helps build her confidence in herself and helps both Peeta and herself to become fan favourite. This helps them to become the victors of the 74th Hunger

The Hunger Games forces them to interact and boosts their relationship into a love for each other. As far as abiding by the game makers rules, Katniss also suffers the consequences of other tributes mistakes and unluckiness. One instance is when she was too close to the edge of the arena, there was a raging forest fire, inserted by the game makers, spreading with flaming balls of fire aimed at Katniss while she ran away. This forced her to move and go somewhere else. At the end of the games Katniss, Peeta, and another tribute named Cato, were fighting for the winner of the Hunger Games.

I learned the true power that lies between the covers of a book when I started reading about Katniss Everdeen in the Hunger Games trilogy. Her story opened the doors to reading and invited me into fantastic worlds I had never before experienced. Now I will forever love reading and literature and it has positively impacted my vocabulary, the way I view life and my life in general.
