Like always, girls go first. With all the women in fear, Katniss was just hoping her name wasn’t going to get called. Effie Trinket, who does the honors of pulling out the tribute’s name out of a glass ball with all the possible tributes names on the paper. When Prim Everdeen’s name was called by Effie Trinket, Katniss is in shock. The crowd around was unhappy as they usually are when a twelve
16 year old Katniss Everdeen was born in District 12. Her father died in a coal mining accident when she was 11. He taught her how to hunt, and more importantly how to survive. After her father’s death, she assumed role of head in their home, and provided for her mother and sister. Her little sister Primrose is twelve. Katniss would do anything for her sister, and is more than willing to die for her. These traits are put front and center after Prim is chosen for the games. Katniss volunteers for her sister in the games. This shows just how deep love runs through her veins.
The author also builds another character, who shared many similarities with Katniss, Gale Hawthorne, Katniss’s best friends. In the
Throughout the book, Katniss was eminently stubborn and uncooperative when it came to following certain Capitol guidelines and rules. I volunteer as a tribute!" Collins, 22. This action not only saves her sister but also tests the Capitol's authority and shows Katniss' refusal to accept the unjust rules that make children fight to the death. After Katniss gets injured by the fire and is situated in a tree, she sees Rue in a neighboring tree and forms a friendship with her.
In every story, there is the good and there is the bad. Usually, this is shown from the characters in the story. The Hunger Games is a story that portraits both of these sides; the light and the dark. Today, I know I am supposed to talk about only 3 characters, but there are so many characters in the story that are so interesting. So instead, I will be talking about 4 characters from this book. The 4 characters that I chose to talk about is Katniss Everdeen, Peeta Mellark, Madge Undersee and Cato.
Her family, Gale, Madge (Mayor’s daughter) and she were given a mocking-jay pin from Prim and a packet of cookies by Peeta’s father visits Katniss in the Justice Building.

Katniss has reached the point where she is off to the Capitol. She meets Haymitch and Effie who are her mentors. Haymitch and Effie are her supernatural aid. They are there to help her prepare for the games and to teach her how to win. Haymitch is a previous victor who informs Katniss of what the games are going to be like. Haymitch says that the best advice he has for Katniss is “Stay Alive”. Katniss is trying to get as much information out of Haymitch because she wants to know how to win. Haymitch tries to explain to Katniss that if she wants to win, she needs to get people to like her because that is what will bring her sponsors. Effie is there for moral support and she tries to see the positive in what the games bring. Effie always says “Happy Hunger Games! And may the odds be ever in your favor!”. Effie is there to make sure that Katniss is visually appealing and that she is who everyone wants to be. She wants Katniss to enjoy the time she has left because she may never get to experience anything like it again.
Chapter 3: Even as Katniss is being ripped away from her family she does what she can to try to keep it together. She has sacrificed herself for their sake, and wants to make sure that they survive without her. Katniss promises that she'll try to win for Prim. Love motivates her. Katniss is touched because the baker promises to keep an eye on Prim. He also hands her cookies. Katniss continues to discover that she’s made more connections in District 12 than she realized. Madge, for example, seems to think of Katniss as her friend, despite their class differences.Although Gale and Katniss have never acknowledged how close they are before, the fact that they now have limited time together pushes them to drop some of their pretenses. Katniss is

Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games is a realistic encounter of survival reflecting life’s struggle with living below poverty, hunger, and survival for life endurance to the end. The focus character, Katniss Everdeen, is a strong-willed teenager whose eventful encounter of life contributes to her winning The 74th Hunger Game. After the death of her father, Katniss relentlessly takes charge in providing the needs for her family through their challenges in life while living below poverty level. It is through her sheer determination and perseverance by which she learns that while freedom of choice is limited by laws, it empowers the individual to reject corrupt controls and make decisions based on personal responsibility.

In a not-too-distant, some 74 years, into the future the United States of America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war, to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 13 districts. The Games are meant to be viewed as entertainment, but every citizen knows their purpose, as brutal intimidation of the subjugated districts. While competing in the Hunger Games, Katniss is unsure if Peeta is on her side or not because he betrays her and joins the Careers; plotting to team up and kill the weak. This make Katniss extremely confused, causing her to be uncertain of whether or not she will be able to kill Peeta since he is her supposed star-crossed lover. She also debates with herself because she cannot decide if she is in love with Gale or Peeta. During the Hunger Games, Katniss becomes friends with Rue through the mocking jay pin. Rue is killed, but Katniss remembers her by using the wisdom that she learned from Rue.
