Page 1 Ken Price Bro In Ken Price’s sculpture Bro, he uses form to create a 3D sculptural image of abstract lines. Bro is a very abstract sculpture in shape and form, as it does not attempt to portray reality, but seeks to achieve its effect using shape, form, and texture. The form of the sculpture is smooth, full, and asymmetrical. The shape of bottom half of the sculpture is wide and thick, creating a sense of balance in the artwork. Expanding up and out of the bottom of the sculpture is two tall, straight lines. The lines are thick and smooth, and at the top of both lines they curl into an O-shape, causing them both to resemble the number nine. Significantly, Ken Price uses these lines to create a feeling of movement in the sculpture. Also, Ken Price uses differing scales and proportions for each of the two lines, as one is thicker and taller than the other. …show more content…
The color scheme for Bro, is a warm shade of rusty red with black etched into abstract cracks, giving it a sense of decay that conflicts with the sculpture's modern form. To be more specific, the paint creates a look of rusty metal. Overall, the sculpture looks like something one might find in a factory, as its form resembles rusted metal. One of Ken Price’s main influences was a Mexican curio shop near his home in Southern California. He was very inspired by some of the unusual and abstract objects he found in it. Ken was also very inspired by nature, as he lived near the Santa Monica Mountains. In the
The lines within the composition draws the viewer into several directions. The ruffles draw the eyes upward to the Daniel’s finger as it points to the right. Daniel’s finger directs the viewer horizontally as it does the king. The table with its array of dishes is another example of a horizontal line. The king’s hands are holding a fork and knife. The fork is also pointing right where as the knife is pointing left diagonally towards the king. The courtesan, leaning against the king’s right shoulder, is another example of a diagonal line. The painting also has a vertical feel to it. This is evident in the composition of Daniel standing, the candle and the arm holding the cigar. Like every line, every color used draw attention to the object.
The first thing you notice about sculpture is the texture of it, it feels smooth, like its made of a clay yet it has a lot of depth and value, the skull itself isn’t proportional since it is tilted to
The material artists use for their artwork can influence the overall message of the piece. Jeff Koon works with a few different types of mediums which influence the image of the work. His piece Puppy, is a large sculpture of a dog in front of a building. The skeleton of this piece is made of stainless steel and is filled worth soil. The entire sculpture is covered with live flowering plants. I really liked this piece because the artist is using a living medium to create his work. This gives the dog a sense of being alive. In addition to this the medium used in this piece is very unexpected. Most sculptures are made of clay, metal, wood, etc. yet Koon used flowers which is out of the ordinary. Another sculpture by Koon is named Balloon Dog.
He successfully merged modern sculptural concerns with traditional forms through drawings and sculptures. The structural skill of these works is incredible, even breathtaking at times; Neri spent his lifetime exploring the possibilities of combining posture, movement and material to make many great peices. Through years of sketches, drawings and paintings, he’s found the balance of how shapes and hues fit together. Through texture and paint, he’s able to simulate the effect of actual flesh while bringing out the inner emotion of the figures. Neri’s bronzes, marbles and plasters immortalize the amazing adventure of being alive and being free. The three dimensional pieces do not actually move, however the blending of the textures make you visualize and anticipated next movement, Neri’s work has the power to fill the viewer with
The marble used to create the sculpture brings out the fine quality of such material. It also adds elegance and sensuous grace to the whole sculpture. The use of marble links the sculpture to the radiance and softness of the female skin. The hips of the
With the sculpture straight ahead, the audience sees a profile view of the scene; however, the artist created the sculpture with enough space and depth to be able to view the front of the woman’s face from a side angle. The artist created the seated woman with much detail; her nose, chin, slightly opened mouth, pronounced brow line and inset eyes show this. She reaches for the chest with her right arm in a very delicate manner as her left arm lays on the throne for support.
With works in every known medium, from every part of the world, throughout all points in history, exploring the vast collection of the Museum of Modern Art was an overwhelming experience. The objects in the Department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts are an important historical collection, reflecting the development of a number of art forms in Western Europe. The department's holdings covered sculpture in many sizes, woodwork and furniture, ceramics and glass, jewelry, and tapestries. The gallery attracted my appreciation of the realistic qualities of the human body often portrayed in sculpture.
To further elaborate upon the elements of art on the painting, the lines are in their vast
There are a variety of geometric shapes Pereira uses, such as lines that reach outward the directly upward and blocks of different colors throughout the piece. These shapes give the piece depth, as well as makes it seem as the fire is reaching towards the top of the painting. She uses different shades of red and orange inside the column to reproduce to visual effect of fire. The patterns employed in this piece give the artwork a very centralized focal point, which is the column.
Standing in front of this sculpture, the viewer can feel the wind whipping around them and the sea spraying you in the face. The energy and motion add to the dramatic effect that immediately draws the viewer in. This dramatic effect is created by the lines of the figure. Nike’s elongated wings catch your eye and create a lengthy transverse line which adds to the drama. The drapery that clothes the figure has the same
It is moreover pyramidal in structure with the vertex coinciding with Mary’s head. The base of the sculpture depicts the rock of Golgotha and is broader than the progressive
Our world is full of so many grandiose monuments, eye-catching sculptures, and stunning statues, each having an individual story to tell. Thousands of them have been created however, only a small number of them are actually extraordinary and picture-worthy. This paper will compare and contrast two of those picture-worthy sculptures. Furthermore, I will examine the aspects of each of these sculptures. I will compare and contrast what each of them represents, the differences in texture, their size and their tone.
The use of line in this piece is also very interesting. The artist employs a high horizontal line to create a plunging effect giving the piece more depth. Another use of lines in the image is to create focal points to attract the viewer. Lines are also used to separate the different sections of the painting. Overall this painting uses lines in dynamic ways that vastly enhance the viewers’ pleasure and admiration of the piece.
I chose this artwork because I thought that it was very well done, and I was fascinated with how much attention to detail the artist had. Many of the visual elements can be found in Franz Ludwig Catel’s painting “Inside the Colosseum”. The painting uses actual lines,
The second sculpture I want to talk about today is “Campus Talk” by Dennis Smith. This is another permanent sculpture on Western Michigan University and is one that everyone usually sees when they are heading to the library. This sculpture is my third favorite one on campus at this point in time. The sculpture has two students talking to another student on a bike. Dennis Smith also did a superb job using the elements of art throughout this sculpture. When observing the sculpture, the first thing you notice is the contour lines in the sculpture such as the book cover, fingers, and the straps on the backpack. These lines help define the outside edges of the sculpture. The next element of art that one can see in this sculpture is shape. The wheel on the bike is a geometric shape because it is a circle. This a great example of this element and one that anyone who views it can find. The third element present in this sculpture is value. In the sculpture, there is a bit of a grey scale although the sculpture is mostly light green now due to the weather. The fourth element present in this sculpture is the texture. The sculpture has a simulated texture which means that it
