I volunteered at Tender Mercies pet organization on April 1,3, and 20. to complete my service learning of 6 hours. There is always so much to learn at the kennel because there is always new dogs looking for homes. Dogs are unique just like humans and they have different needs and behaviors so it makes it special to care for them. This time I had a different experience because I got to learn more about borders, which are dogs that already have owners and are only staying temporarily. The time I volunteered, I got to work closer with them and learn how you care for them. Basically, they are the same as any other dog in the kennel, but they have special instructions on how to feed them and when to take them outside. The owner of the dog will leave …show more content…
I also learned how to deal with two borders who are aggressive with each other. Two borders were in the same kennel because they were from the same owner, but they would get aggressive with each other over the simplest things. They eventually hurt each other and so we moved them into separate kennels and watched them closely. The most important thing that the kennel does is promote adoption. People come in looking for a dog and we try to help them find the perfect companion. They can go in the kennel with the dogs and get acquainted in order to find the dog that they are looking for. Also, each week they assign certain days to each dog on which they will take a picture of that dog and post it to facebook, to promote their adoption. They also allow volunteers to take pictures or videos with the dogs to show how they behave and what they are …show more content…
When we learn, we learn things depending on our perspective on life, but if you step back you can see that there are many ways to look at things. If I learned anything, it’s that we all see things different, so we should stop and think about that before we complain about someone or something. I’ve always struggled with that concept and now it’s getting easier to see. If someone says something you don’t agree with, then you have to try to see it from their point of view. For example, when you are working with people, you have to take their opinions into consideration or you can't function properly. It is much easier to talk things out with someone you work with rather than a stranger, but when working at the kennel, you have to talk to all kinds of people. I’ve had to talk to people who wanted to adopt, people bringing their dogs to stay and other volunteers. When you do this, you have to listen to their needs and attend to them properly. For example, when people bring their dogs, you have to abide by their instructions even if they are different than what you usually do. Also, when people come to adopt, you have to make sure to tell the truth, but also try to find them a dog they will like according to their preferences Overall, I learned a lot about how to talk to people and how to function around

Patience is a very important quality to posses when it comes to dog training. It might take to a child months to learn the ABC's as well as for a dog to develop a new skill. It is important to remember that each dog is different, for some it might take one class and for some more. Some dogs will be driven by treats and some by a game. It is essential to find what makes them feel good, to help them recognize that they did right. It is important to commit to the process and to make sure that everyone of the family are engaged in the process, not to provide mixed signals to the
The iconic dog, Snoopy, from Peanuts, an American comic strip, fashions the unaltered ear. His ear hangs loosely from the starting point on his skull, a natural method that many breeds are not allowed as it does not fit the standard that the American Kennel Association outlines. Cosmetic surgeries, such as tail docking and ear cropping, are popular alterations of many Working, Terrier, and Herding breeds. The alteration is not beneficial to the animal, but simply meets the “desired look” that the association desires. Even though time the practice is deemed acceptable in the United States, unnecessary cosmetic procedures on the tails and ears of canines are animal abuse because the surgeries have no advantage to the health or wellbeing of the
UW Fond Du Lac, I feel, is the best school for me. I want to go into animal services which enables me to help the one thing that I have loved all my life. Being in this profession I will be able to continue doing what I love and that's protecting those animals who don't have a voice or get the chance to live a life full of love and happiness.
The purpose of this report is the RSPCA has assignment me to create a training manual to be given to people who adopt cats and dogs. The animal I’ve chosen to do for this task is a dog. The creation of this training manual requires a complete understanding of each theory and process of learning which includes providing an informative report with clear instructions for owners to use when training their new pets.
Not only does the program assist the prisoner but helps the dog as well. Inmates are taught by Kentucky Humane Society behavior trainers and earn $2 a day while on the job. Using a moist material, wipe down the cat kennel, all around, with warm water and a soap. You can make use of a scrubbing brush with soap and water for more deeper stains. You'll need to make sure that you use just delicate dish soap to clean both the pet crates and pet kennels. Harsh cleaners are irritating to pet's skin, and residues left finished from cleaners can even make your pets fall sick.
It is often said that a dog is a man’s best friend. In the last 14,000 years, dogs have accompanied man by helping him hunt, guard, and protect. In our modern world, dogs help us combat in war, search-and-rescue, guide the blind, deaf, discapacitated, rehabilitate patients in therapy, aid law enforcement, and are part of our family as beloved pets (Coren). Although canine superstars such as Lassie, Old Yeller, and Rin Tin Tin portray the perfect dog we all want in our lives, these ideals are far from the truth. Many first-time dog owners expect dogs to know behaviors such as how to walk on a leash, not bite, not destroy the house, and in addition to many others. In reality, dogs must be trained on what their handler wants them to do. It is
