Developmental Leadership Skills
One of the main objectives of developing leadership skills is having the ability to identify the strengths and weaknesses that are associated with the type of leadership styles utilized. Personal development for me comes through leadership training programs, developmental activities and self- help activities. Most leadership training programs are designed to increase generic skills and behaviors relevant for managerial effectiveness and advancement (Yukl, 2006; p.382). However, the skills required for the leadership position, that I am currently seeking, have more emphasis on skills needed by managers in their current position than on skills needed to prepare for promotion to a higher position (Rothwell & Kazanas, 1994). Utilizing multisource feedback is another form of development that will benefit my leadership skills. Therefore identifying the sources of feedback makes a difference. The effectiveness of multisource feedback programs depends not only on the type and form of feedback, but also on how it is presented to manager (Kaplan 1993; Yukl & Lepsinger, 1995). Receiving feedback is great, nevertheless, understanding how to apply the feedback is another phase. According to Yukl (2006), common variations are described: (1) managers just receive feedback report and are left to interpret it alone; (2) managers receive a feedback report followed by a one-on-one meeting with a facilitator; and (3) managers attend group workshop with a

The case study on performance coaching with reference to the role of Darcy Gallagher gives the opportunity to comprehend the qualities and skills that need to be nourished to become an effective leader. The kingpin of the case study is the important elements of competency that affect the leadership outcomes and are influenced by the individual characteristics of the leader as well. When creating leadership competencies certain factors are considered such as business strategies and future trends. To drive the use of competencies in selecting and developing leaders HR practitioners should use the business strategies. Whether a leader defines success as career progression, sphere of influence, or the continual improvement of their management skills, there is one singular fact that all leaders must grasp in order to be effective and impactful: they have to become great providers and receivers of feedback. During the Leadership Fundamentals course of the Master of Science in Leadership, I learned the importance of how to think not what to think. I was able to take this lesson learned one step further during the Emotional Intelligence course by learning the importance and methods of considering how others think and feel in regards to my behavior, actions, or communication. In this paper, I will summarize the key principles that I learned during the Leading Change course and describe how the course contributed to my building a holistic understanding of leadership by identifying concepts that improved my knowledge the most. Finally, I will describe strengths, areas of improvement, and a targeted improvement plan that will assist me in achieving excellence in leadership.

The US Army has a Leadership Requirements Model to describe the make-up of an Army leader. It defines the attributes a leader should possess and the competencies the individual should perform. All of the model’s attributes and competencies holistically contribute to the leader’s success. It is important for me to master these concepts and improve upon the areas I am weak in. A sub-element of the “Achieves” competency - giving feedback - is a weakness of mine. I will improve my ability to give feedback during my study at the Command and General Staff Officer’s Course (CGSOC) this year because it increases my effectiveness as a leader, develops others, and contributes to the success of strategic Army objectives.
