“Pursuit of Happiness (Nightmare)” by Kid Cudi Fame and happiness is a major desire in today’s society. The journey to achieve immense happiness is not always the prettiest and may not produce the life one desires. Kid Cudi expertly describes the struggle of finding happiness in the hit rap song, “Pursuit of Happiness (Nightmare).” The song begins with Cudi describing his journey of happiness. It starts with the lyrics “Crush a bit, little bit, roll it up, take a hit. Feelin’ lit, feelin’ light, 2 am summer night.” “Kid Cudi describes a virtual experience making life about getting intoxicated or high, and glamorize the effects these substances have. The lyrics insist that these substances are necessary for this pursuit of happiness Kid Cudi is on,” (Rhetoric and Pop Culture). Many young people today struggle with the perception that drugs and alcohol will bring bliss. Next, in the verse it says, “hand on the wheel, driving drunk I’m doing my thang.” “The singer knows this lifestyle will result in him burning out too fast,” (LyricsMode). He is doing activities that in the moment will bring him happiness, but in the long run will be destructive. …show more content…

Cudi says, “people told me slow my roll, I’m screaming out f*** that.” “He talks about how he wants happiness and will keep trying to get it despite how others feel about it,” (Rhetoric and Pop Culture). At this point Cudi is doing what he believes will make him happy without worrying what other people think of his idea of “happiness.” The song goes on to say “If I fall, if I die, I know I lived it to the fullest and missed some bullets.” “…it focuses on how achieving happiness is very important but the journey may not be easy or as glamorous as expected,” (Rhetoric and Pop Culture).
