According to a many published articles discussing ever increasing cost for college bound students the cost for room and board is exploding. Unfortunately when your child graduates, there’s little to show for those housing dollars. FHA’s “Kiddie Condo” program may allow you to get something back for your money and create a great tax deduction.
Don’t let the name “Kiddie Condo” fool you. You don’t have to limit your purchase to just a condominium with the Kiddie Condo Program. FHA allows for any one to four family properties to be included in the program. With just 3.5 percent for the down payment FHA allows parents and their college bound child the opportunity to purchase a home while attending college anywhere in the country. Although multi-family

One solution is to make the mortgage payment yourself and have the child pay you each month. That way you know that the mortgage is being paid as agreed.
It goes without saying that before opting to buy a home for your student bound child, be certain that he or she is responsible enough to pay bills on time, maintain the property and collect any rental payments he might be collecting for fellow students. Also, be reasonably sure that he or she isn’t going to quit or change schools anytime soon.
If your college bound student takes in student renters to help with their costs, you become a landlord and having a rental agreement in place is probably a good idea. If a student/roommate isn’t responsible with their payment get in touch with their parent. Also, don’t forget that as a landlord, you take on the liability issues that are involved with a rental. If someone gets hurt on the property, you might be sued. Obtain sufficient liability insurance, so you’re covered in case of a lawsuit. Talk to your insurance agent about adding an umbrella liability policy. It boosts your coverage to $1 million and is a fairly inexpensive way to buy peace of
Anyone who has welcomed a newborn into their family understands the financial burden that follows. Many young couples or single-family parents struggle to survive financially without the added expense of pregnancy and newborn. Hence, after the initial pregnancy
The educational gap between low-income children and the average American presents a serious problem that has only been perpetuated through government-funded public housing projects. Indeed, this divide eventually translates to a disparity of college acceptance rates and job placement rates. Thus, the academic success of children from low-income families directly threatens their upward mobility. A continued shift toward increased tenant-based housing would give families the opportunity to move out of their economically segregated neighborhoods and choose the neighborhood that best meets their children’s needs. Indeed, despite the Housing Choice voucher program’s current flaws, in each of the case studies, the housing choice vouchers have resulted
This equates to approximately $20,000 per year for full-time students, plus about $80 per month for books. The housing allowance is equal to a Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) for an E-5 with dependents, but this is based on the geographic location of the school. Bear in mind that for vocational programs that offer apprenticeship and on-the-job training (OJT), the Post-9/11 Bill will cover the full cost of housing during the initial six months of training. This housing allowance decreases every six months until it reaches 20 percent in the third and final years of
This study discusses the risks that college students can be exposed to when choosing off campus housing. Initially, this article presents the property owners of rental properties as individuals who do not take care of their properties and have no concern for the tenant. Further reading of this article finds that due to the high turnover with rental properties and college students there is a greater risk of the student becoming physically sick due to the environment within the rental property. “Globally, housing is the single most important environmental factor associated with disease conditions and higher mortality and morbidity rates (United Nations, 2007)” (Johnson, Cole & Merrill, 2009, p. 2).
Families require stabilized housing that is affordable, safe and maintained. If they don’t have stabile housing they are moving more often and this can effect the children’s education when being moved from school to school. The parents are unable to focus on the other areas of their lives when they are unable to find decent housing.
The act also appears to greatly have an impact on families with children under the age of 18. According to Goldberg and Goldberg (2013), families with children under the age of 18, should be focused on safe housing and child development. Leventhal and Newman (2010), stated that a lack of quality housing can affect children’s health, and development. Furthermore, lack of access to housing could affect families with children. For instance, families can suffer from trauma or psychological stress due to homelessness (Kilmer, Cook, Crusto, Strater & Haber, 2012). The access to affordable and quality housing is essential for families with children. Therefore, the Fair Housing Act prevents barriers to attain housing, and allow access for families with children to purchase
Housing insecurity for college student is not a topic that has been greatly researched in America. However, the research that has been done is quite awakening. According to Broton & Goldrick-Rab (2016), “ student families earning an average of just $20,000 a year are now required to pay at least $8,000 for one year of community college and more than $12,000 a year at a public university (p.17). This is asinine because most families that make only $20,000 do not have means to fork out thousands of dollars for their child to go to college. In another study, nearly 90% of college students at campuses around Wisconsin reported being worried about not having enough money to pay for things in college (Broton & Goldrick-Rab, 2016). In addition, 78%
Room and board make up a significant percentage of college costs at four-year colleges. “Living at home also saved me a lot of money on living expenses … that was an added benefit financially,” says O’Brien.
We will be helping with the Thursday Night meal at the Highland Center on the 5th Thursday of each month for the rest of the year. The next 5th Thursday is July 30th. Stephanie Slack will be heading up our group as Ronney Joe will be out of town.
Many high school students that have recently graduated are about to embark into the next academic phase of their lives, college. Depending on whether they select to attend a local college or an out of state college is predicated by the amount of financial resources that they and/or their parents have available to invest. One way that parents are saving on the costs of higher education for their children who decide to go to an out of state college is by purchasing them a condominium instead on spending money on a dorm room or apartment. The article in the Wall Street Journal discusses how purchasing a condominium for your child(ren) to stay in while attending college rather than spending money on a dorm or renting an apartment is more beneficial
Did you know, that in the United States alone, Over 200,000 children are charged and imprisoned every year as adults? Early in the 20th century, most states established juvenile courts to rehabilitate and not just punish youthful offenders. The system was designed for children to have a second chance at their lives. “A separate juvenile-justice system, which sought to rehabilitate and not just punish children, was part of a movement by progressives to create a legally defined adolescence through the passage of child-labor and compulsory education laws and the creation of parks and open spaces.”(How to reduce crime Pg 1) Although the view on juveniles committing brutal crimes is nearly inconceivable, it is not a solution to give juveniles adult consequences because the effects of the adult system on juveniles are not effective.

In addition, the cost of living is so much cheaper here in Atlanta that we can spend more money on extra-curricular activities for our kids and enjoy a better quality family life. Therefore, speaking as an Atlantan of ten years standing, I firmly believe that as long as you find a condo near a good school for your children, the life here compares very favorably with other U.S.
Especially here in Alaska. Things are so expensive and unless you have a really good job you can’t pay everyday bills and save the amount needed. If millennials are saving it will be at a rate that will make them available to purchase when they’re about 30. According to a study I found 68 % of millennials said they have saved less than $1000.00 for a down payment (80 % of millennials say they want to buy a home, By: Ester Bloom). There are a lot of programs out there that can help people get familiar with the homebuying process and programs available for down payment assistance and other housing scholarships. I feel like not too many of millennials know about these, When I started to look for a home buying opportunity I had to find all this on my own.
