Kids connection There are many ways to approach a service project and approaching it correctly is key to really learning and growing as a person from the experience. Really committing yourself during service is a huge concept in my eyes so one can truly gain the true experience of the project. Understanding the word shalom is critical to learning how shalom and the service learning project connects. The terms and mindset one decides to take and apply to serving will ultimately lead to how much they will grow during their service project. As I prepare to serve at kids connection I have a few set goals for myself to get the best out of the experience. I plan to fully commit and not just go there because I have to. I want to interact and build relationships with the children. I hope to find the children's interests out, so I can participate and do activities with them. By doing this I hope to learn about them and start building a trusting relationship with them. This is my plan as I am going in, but I know when dealing with children nothing goes as planned. I am going to be ready to adjust to whatever happens, but I am excited to help out with the children. All in all I believe this is a good opportunity to interact with children and learn how each individual is unique in their own way. Shalom in the dictionary is defined as a Hebrew word meaning peace, …show more content…
I want to be able to take away and learn from these children. I think It is crucial to be able to make the best out of every situation and be there to help and serve others. The service learning experience is very relatable to shalom in the sense that one should apply the qualities of shalom while helping and serving others. Knowing and applying some qualities of shalom at the service learning project will allow for one to truly see growth in themselves at the service learning
Kid zone, the most family attracted location that provides fun for all ages. Setting up kid zone is really easy and we do it 2 hours before the game starts because gates open an hour and half before the first pitch. The bouncy house needs to be inflated, each game has to be set up, and also our main table where we sell tickets for a dollar each has to be brought in from the press box. Kid zone, the most enjoyable experience for kids of any age. Kid zone is located by right field and is filled with games and a bouncy house. Games such as fast pitch, bean bag toss, and corn hole. If you knock all the cans down, get over 60 in fast pitch and get one bag in, then you win a free ticket to a Jackal’s game. Kid zone can become a little bit crazy
In the beginning, the Children’s Bureau was part of the Department of Commerce, but was later transferred to the Department of Labor in 1913. The law that brought the Children’s Bureau into existence also called for the Bureau to be headed by a Chief, who would be a Presidential appointee, subject to Senate confirmation. The first Chief of the Children's Bureau was Julia Lathrop, one of the Chicago women who helped lobby for the Illinois juvenile court. During the initial years, the Children’s Bureau took on as special projects child mortality, deaths of mothers in childbirth, child labor, and juvenile delinquency (Bradbury and Eliot, 1956). Through studies and surveys, as well as through public education programs, improvements were shown in
Serving others is a down deep way of learning more about yourself and helping others to see past themselves. Our Business and Professional Communication class participated in several service projects, which were interesting and exciting to be involved with helping others. As I am studying the major courses of Early Childhood/Special Education, our group project with the “Big Brothers Big Sister” program was very memorable to me. It was wonderful to have fun and participate in various activities with the kids. The environment was caring due to everyone helping each other accomplish different tasks. It was a great feeling to be able to share our time, talents, and hearts with the kids.
We have all worked with kids in our past and enjoyed our experiences; we are all passionate about working with them. Several of us will be working
In the assigned article entitled “Why Service Learning” by Bruce W. Speck, it provides great insight as to why we need to engage in service learning. This article focused on the questions that were like the reasoning behind service learning and how does it benefit the student. One definition in the article that stood out to me was service learning being defined as a pedagogy that fosters the development of skills and knowledge needed for participation in public life. This was prevalent because it allows the student to network with others outside of the community while giving back. Service learning was created to get away from the traditional way of learning while implementing a new learning system.

The Child Study data I have gathered comes from the observation I have completed at Mission Bell Elementary School. Mission Bell Elementary School is a local school in Riverside. In the P.M preschool class there are 24 students, one teacher, and one assistant. The child I decided to observe is names Zoe. Zoe is 4 years and 10 months old. I immediately was drawn to Zoe because she had such a big personality, was very social, and smart. I am glad that I choose to observe Zoe because she was able to make my observation process smooth and easy. While observing her I had to pay close attention to her biosocial development, motor skills, cognitive skills, communication skills,
Kid nation was a reality tv show where kids run a ghost town that was located in new mexico without parents only kids. It was an experience that many kids will never forget but there was occasion that did not turn out well and did affect the kids in very awful ways those ways were physical and mental injury were two big ones but their was also how the town affect the kids and many internal problems. Many people believe that kid nation was a good experience for kids but for my own personal opinion I think that it was very bad for the kids and could have scarred them for life.
Wonderful Kids Program, the destination families program also utilizes mental health services in the program. It has been shown that many of foster youth deal with mental issues “Seventy five percent (75%) of foster youth suffer from severe emotional disturbances” and additionally 65% of foster youth were evaluated as needing mental services but would rarely receive them ("The Foster Care Crisis."). The mental health team in the Destination Family program specifically focuses on teenagers and helps these teens process through their past loss and grief, attachment and bonding difficulties, along with support and stabilizing the teenagers. They also assist in preparing teenagers for permanency and helping them understand the importance of finding a forever family. The
How are children supposed to improve their behavior if they are being trapped in corners by horrendous, scummy, and forceful men that want to corrupt the people these minors could become? This is what teenagers across the United States deal with when they are sent to an adult prison. Gangs, violence, and more criminal activity is shoved in their faces in order for them to survive in the commune. The juvenile justice system is undoubtedly erratic and works based off many different factors. We saw in the Frontline Documentary, directed by Janet Tobia and Laura Rabhan Baron, four cases of juveniles that did different crimes and received odd punishments based on their actions.
The definition of art is “The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination.”(Oxford Dictionaries). Art comes in many forms and not all art is a painting or a drawing. Throughout the book, characters use art skillfully, art is for survival and is a tool to withstand or to escape the corrupt government. Additionally, art is a powerful force that communicates messages through a picture. Furthermore, what allows art to have a powerful impact is that art is expressive. Their messages and stories are very powerful from the artist. In New Middletown, art is what helps Max withstand. In Catherine Austen’s All Good Children, art is a positive force in the novel.
For the service learning project, I choose the school Archway, located in Atco, NJ. This is an alternative school. The students who attend it suffer a range of disabilities and each child has their own needs. Most struggle with behavioral issues and emotional disabilities. I believe this school is a good fit for this project, because it will give me a unique experience that I will not able to have at a public school. That is important for me, because I wish to eventually work in the mental health field, and observing at Archway will give me hands on experience of what mentally disabled children are facing, and how a professional trained in that field handles it.
Service Learning is an educational strategy set in place to enlighten students with instruction and experience, in addition to improve learning , teach responsibility, and support the community. Service learning is vital to the development of the student, given that it intertwines academic and personal development together. It is aimed to enhance a student’s learning in all aspects of life.
To begin, I believe that Service-Learning helps one develop and hone their leadership skills. This world does and will always need leaders, and the young generation is next in line as the head of our society. These people need to be prepared to grab the baton from the previous generation and help fix and prevent many of the problems that previous generations have produced. If planned and executed properly, Service-Learning can
