Kids Should Bring Devices To School

The debate of allowing cell phones in schools is ongoing. Many feel that cell phones should not be allowed in schools because they may be a distraction to learning. However, there are also multiple reasons why cell phones should be allowed in school. Some of those reasons include educational purposes, serve as a communication tool, and also be used as a resource for the future of many students. Cell phones are present everywhere and many people, regardless of age, use a cell phone or mobile device every day. This paper will provide a more detailed explanation of why cell phones should be allowed in schools.

Are you always on your phone? Either Snapchatting, on Instagram, scrolling through your twitter feed? It can be pretty temping to pick up your phone and do this stuff in class but you can use them in good ways in school. George Washington Middle School currently has cell phones banned in class. Although most teachers think that cell phones are a distraction, cell phones should be allowed in class because students feel anxious without their phones, there are many educational uses, and allowing phones is more convenient.

A big controversy of our generation today is concerning of a topic that many of us praise and could not live without. In fact, spin.com claims that the average American listens to four hours of music each day. So is music effective or hurtful to our studying? This may be an eternal topic for we don’t truly have one answer. In numerous ways listening to music is beneficial, belie some studies have come to find out it can also be harmful. Students should be given the option to listen to music in class, but whether they choose to take upon this privilege or not is up to them.

It can help students pay attention to the work they are doing and possibly even learn more while listening to music. While, yes listening to music during a lecture will probably not exactly help with listening to it, it can help during times where the teachers are not talking. For example, while reading a novel, I find it helpful to listen to music in the background. It helps me from drifting off in the middle of a sentence. Also, whilst writing novels, I will listen to a playlist I made that relates to the book I’m writing. It will help inspire creativity and also help with the not drifting off. Additionally, many researchers have proven that music helps you focus. A lot of tips people give to students is to listen to music while studying or doing homework. Have you ever heard of the gruesome Columbine High School massacre? This incident occurred on April 20th 1999 and involved two students embarking on a shooting rampage, killing twelve students, a teacher and wounding twenty three others. Unfortunately during this incident, the school 's most easily accessible phone was on the complete other side of the school in the library. Perhaps some of these lives could have been saved if the students in this class had cell phones that they could 've used to contact the authorities more quickly. The BYOD policy in schools, involves students bringing their personal devices such as laptops, tablets, smartphones, or other mobile devices into the learning environment. NMC (2014) states that BYOD has positive impacts towards contemporary learning styles of 21st century learners.

Do you ever wish that you could bring your own device to school? Just think how you wouldn't have to bring home all of your textbooks every night. Music is all around us, no matter where you are. Shouldn’t we be able to listen to it in school too? Students should be allowed to listen to music in class because it keeps them on task, memorizing important informations is easier, and it tunes out distractions helping you focus.
