In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the main character Scout Finch lives with her brother, Jem, and their father, Atticus Finch, who is a lawyer in the southern Alabama town of Maycomb. They also have a black maid Calpurnia which allows the children to see that black people aren’t so different and thus they do not have the racial bias unlike most of the people in their town. The setting is also very important to note that around the Great Depression southern America was still heavily racist. The next winter, Jem and Scout find presents in the tree, which has been a recurring thing, until Nathan Radley plugs the tree hole with cement.
The main controversy of the book commences as their father Atticus agrees to defend a black man named Tom Robinson, who has been accused of raping a white woman named Mayella Ewell. Because Atticus chose to defend Tom, Scout and Jem are verbally abused by the kids in school such as when Lee says, “He had announced in the schoolyard the day before that Scout Finch’s daddy defended Niggers.”…
