Why Is Intersectionality Important

In today's day and age the ideals of feminism are extremely important. They are important because these ideals such as pay equality and abortion rights are not yet being met by our society. But not only are the ideals of feminism important, but it is important that we ensure we are practising and advocating for the movement of intersectional feminism. The idea of intersectionality was first defined by Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989 and is defined as “the view that women experience oppression in varying configurations and in varying degrees of intensity” meaning that it is important to recognise that women and non-binary individuals experience oppression at different levels because of outside factors such as their ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality or …show more content…

To fully understand oppression you also need to consider other factors that contribute to a person's identity, such as race, sexuality, class or religion. Contrary to previous theories intersectionality introduces the idea that the many different aspects that contribute to a person's identity all collaborate together and contribute to the injustice and inequality that many people are facing in our society. At the time of Crenshaw defining intersectionality the idea that these factors of identity are not discriminated against separately, but instead holistically was not a new idea but had not been defined by anyone before. In an interview with Sheila Thomas, the editorial board member of Perspectives Crenshaw told of a story that helps illustrate the need for intersectionality; “I have a story I tell a lot.
