Dana and Kevin character analysis Octavia E. Butler’s Kindred takes place in the ante-bellum southern United States while showing readers the struggles of that time period through the life of twenty-six year old, black women named Dana. Kevin, Dana’s white husband, who goes back in time with her also, shows us the abolitionist view while trying to save Rufus, Dana’s white relative. Between the struggle of black and white, and slave and master we see the struggle of their relationship both in present and past time. Before informing of their race Octavia informs the reader of Dana and Kevin’s love for each other before race rather than after. “On the day before, we had moved from our apartment in Los Angeles to a house of our own a few miles away in Altadena. The moving was celebration enough for me. We were still unpacking.” (Butler,12). This shows to the reader that owning a house rather than just being grateful for one shows their materialistic mindset at the time. Buz, Kevin and Dana’s alcoholic supervisor, insults their relationship every time he gets. “Hey, you two gonna get together and write some books?... You gonna write some poor-nography together!” (Butler, 54). This shows Buz’s ignorance toward their relationship while more also insulting Dana’s intelligence. “Buz, coming back from the coffee machine, muttered, “Chocolate and Vanilla porn!” (Butler, 56). This informs the audience of how Buz disregards their relationship as something serious instead more of a joke. According to Dana, one woman from the agency, “told me with typical slave- market candor that he and I were “the weirdest looking couple” she had ever seen” (Butler, 56). This shows the reader that even after centuries society still has not evolved from slavery.
