King Tutankhamun (1343-1325 B.C.)
King Tutankhamun lived over 3,300 years ago during a period known as the New Kingdom. This period of time was called the New Kingdom because it was when the pharaohs united upper and lower Egypt into one kingdom with the capital being Memphis near current day Cairo. The reason I chose to write a research paper on King Tut is because he is one of the most well known pharaohs of ancient Egypt. Tutankhamun is most well known only by the discovery of his intact tomb in 1922 by Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon.
King Tut was born in 1343 B.C. into the 18th Dynasty. Early in his life Tutankaten meaning the "Living Image of the Aten" changed his name to the well-known Tutankamun meaning "Living Image of

Not much was known about these tombs and how they were arranged until the British expedition led by Carter and Carnarvon unearthed the untouched intact tomb of King Tutankhamun in 1922. This discovery quickly made King Tutankhamun one of the most famous pharaohs in the history of Egypt. It also changed many of our beliefs as to the mummification process and how the tombs were arranged.
Carter and Carnarvon discovered King Tutankhamun's tomb in the East Valley of the Valley of the Kings. It has been recreated several times in museums around the world. The tomb was actually quite small for a Pharaoh. It was probably built for someone of lesser importance but at the pharaoh's unexpected death was rushed into modification to accommodate the pharaoh. The tomb is composed of four chambers: the annex, antechamber, burial chamber, and treasury. The burial chamber contains wall paintings as well as the coffin of King Tutankhamun.
Before the opening of the tomb novelist Mari Corelli gave a public warning that there would be dire consequences for anyone who entered the sealed tomb. Then just seven weeks after the official opening of the tomb "Tutankhamun's Curse" struck. On April 5th, 1923 Lord Carnarvon died and all sorts of
The pharaoh was undoubtedly the most important terrestrial figure in ancient Egypt and played a significant role in the functioning of Egyptian society. Entrusted with governing the realm of Egypt and providing a link between the Egyptian people and the gods, pharaohs were “an essential element in the maintenance of the position of society in the order of creation”. This idea has been substantiated through the various artefacts located in tombs in the Valley of the Kings, particularly that of Tutankhamun. These finds have shed light on the role and lifestyle of the pharaoh in ancient Egypt. Through the discovery and analysis of these items, historians and archaeologists alike have been able to glean considerable amounts of information in
Tutankhamun’s tomb is thus unique as it was not initially intended for use by a Pharaoh. It is of much smaller scale to other Eighteenth Dynasty royal tombs, and contradicts the traditional structural design. The tomb’s location was also not usually associated with royal burials. The burial chamber walls were uniquely the only tomb walls decorated, and the tomb was preserved largely intact in near-original condition.
Discovered by Howard Carter in 1922, the tomb of King Tutankhamen is one of the most important archaeological discoveries in history. The unearthing of the tomb was the result of years of works that was painstaking and that was also hard. Just like ay other important discovery. Howard Carter had first come to the Valley of the Tombs in 1891. To sift the sands and search for hidden treasures. Howard Carter's dream--indeed, the dream of every Egyptologist-- was that he would discover a tomb. A tomb prey to which had been unopened since antiquity, a tomb which had fallen prey to graverobbers.Lord Carnarvon, who was a British nobleman who was interested in archaeology, financed Carter's archaeological digs. Years of work turned up a few interesting
Tutankhamun is one of the most famous and instantly recognisable Pharaohs of the modern world even though he lived and reigned over 3,000 years ago. The boy King was born in the 11th year of his father’s reign in 1345 BCE and died in 1327 BCE at the age of just 17 or 18 after only being in power for 8 years. Until archaeologist Howard Carter discovered his almost fully-intact tomb in the Valley of the Kings in 1922 CE, the pharaoh was almost unheard of due to the common belief that he was a minor ruler, whose reign was of little consequence. However after this discovery and subsequent discoveries due to excavations, analysis of his mummy and other historical evidence, opinions changed, so much so that today Tutankhamun is recognized as an important
an Egyptian pharaoh of the 18th dynasty (ruled c.1333 BC – 1323 BC in the conventional chronology), during the period of Egyptian history known as the New Kingdom. His original name, Tutankhaten, means "Living Image of Aten",
The discovery of the young King Tutankhamun’s tomb provided some insight on his life as a pharaoh. Tut’s tomb has been the only tomb that has been relatively untouched by tomb raiders, giving egyptologists so much more information than any other tomb in the Valley of Kings (Caselli 12-14). Egyptologist
Tutankhamun’s tomb is the only royal tomb in Egypt to have escaped the discovery of looters and was discovered by archeologist Howard Carter. The death of Tutankhamun was a sudden tragedy that til this day has yet to be solved. The cause of the famous teenage king’s death has been a long drawn out mystery with a range of theories as to how he met his end. There are no historical records explaining the cause or circumstances of his death, nor is there no positive evidence to suggest how he died. However, there are several theories and many of which have changed over the years.
In Ancient Egypt, there was no way to investigate a murder. Even if there was, most records of King Tut have been erased! Archeologists have been making educated guesses about King Tutankhamun’s death since the 1920’s. One theory is that he was murdered by Aye, his power-hungry chief advisor. This is because King Tut’s mummy was very badly injured.
King Tut, also known as King Tutankhamun died at age 19. His tomb was never found until archaeologist Howard Carter found his tomb. Tut’s coffin was all gold, and in his tomb were jewels, gold treasures, and ancient artifacts. Tut was famous for this unknown tomb, and coffin. Everything in his tomb is extremely valuable. When Tut’s father died, Akhenaten, Tut was crowned king. When Tut was older, he began to build burial temples.Tut was very well known. When King Tut was just four, he was able to easily
According to Zahi Hawasse, Before the discovery of the tomb workers that were living in huts built on Tut’s tomb which is one of the reasons why Tut’s tomb was barely touched by grave robbers. Carter spent a long time looking for the tomb and in 1922 he knew that it was his last time to look for it. (Hawasse 12) When The Team was looking for the tomb they had pointed water cups. You had to dig hole to be able to keep the cups from falling over and spilling. One guy who was digging the holes hit a step. He ran to go tell Carter and not the guy in charge of him so he could get a reward. (Hawasse 17) As recorded by the Smithsonian, Carter was saying in a mud brick house at the time. The house now serves as a museum. (Smithsonian) Stated by National Geographic, there were 5000 artifacts found in his tomb in the Valley of the Kings which is located near Luxor, Egypt. When Carter found king tut he tried to get him out of his sarcophagus, while doing this he was rough with King Tut. Now it is hard to tell when and How he died. This also led to the theory that king Tut was murdered. This is the significance of the finding of Tut’s
Tutankhamun was born a prince in Egypt's royal court around the year 1341 BC. His father was the Pharaoh Akhenaten. Tutankhamun's birth name was Tutankhaten, which he changed after his father died. Tutankhamun was born to one of his father's lesser wives and not to his main wife, the powerful Nefertiti. His presence may have caused some strain in the royal courts as Nefertiti had only daughters, but desperately wanted to have a son of her own to take over the throne. At the young age of seven years old Tutankhamun's father died. A few years later Tutankhamun married his sister (which was common for Pharaoh's in Ancient Egypt) and became Pharaoh. Since he was so young he had help ruling the country. The real rulers were a powerful general named
Over 3,300 years ago, a young King, known as Tutankhamen, inherited the rule of the Egyptian kingdom. Tutankhamen was only nine years old at the time. Guardian officials tended to political duties while the boy matured into manhood. As the years pasted, Tutankhamen’s name became widely known. In the young kings’ life, he wife Ankhesenpaaten was unable to birth a son, but she did have the misfortune of miscarrying two daughters. Then when Tutankhamen was nineteen , he died and left his empire in shambles. It’s still a mystery if the King was murdered or if his death was an accident. In year 1922 Tutenhamen finally became known when Howard Carter discovered the young kings tombtomb. As a result of the discoverey of him tomb mulitple leads were uncovered.
The curse of the pharaoh is an ancient myth that originated in ancient egypt. Anyone who invaded a tomb, was then on cursed. This myth was greatly enfamed by the death of one of the archaeologists who discovered King Tut’s Tomb. There are many theories pertaining to why all of this happened.
The excavation and discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb was as a result of the efforts of the Archaeologist Howard Carter and his team. Carter’s discovery of the tomb came by finding steps to the burial near the entrance to the tomb Ramses VI. The subsequent excavated of the site by Carter and his team revealed the greatest ever treasure found from an Egyptian tomb and showed the existence of Tutankhamun. Carter’s methodology for the excavation was that of maintaining records for each artefact and that every artefact that was brought out of the tomb was preserved appropriately. The discovery and excavation of the tomb was a long and complex process but with it revealed much about Tutankhamun.
Since being one of the most intact monuments of Ancient Egypt, the finding of Tutankhamun's tomb by Howard Carter in 1922 is believed to be the utmost significant archaeological discoveries of the century. The treasures found were stored in the following parts of the tomb the Antechamber Annex, and then the Burial Chamber and Treasury. The Ancient Egyptians believed in the afterlife. The customs and beliefs of the Ancient Egyptians called for the preservation of the body and extensive provisions for the after-life which were buried with them in the tomb. These treasures were seen as a continuation of the life of the Pharaoh before his death. It was therefore seen as essential that the favourite items belonging to King Tut would be buried
