The Ku Klux Klan, known as the KKK, has been one of the most feared groups in America since the end of the civil war during post-war reconstruction.. The civil war was not just about the rights of the black man, but it was a very important part. People in the north mostly believed the black person was due the same liberties insured by the U.S. Constitution. The 14th Amendment of the constitution gave equal protection to former slaves. However people in the south saw the black man as inferior and a slave needed to work on the plantation. This led to continued unrest after the war. Some felt the black man and those that supported his cause needed to be stopped. They wanted to control the black population. The Klan also would torture white people who were sympathetic to the blacks and their situation.

The Ku Klux Klan is a secret society founded by former Confederates in Pulaski, Tennessee, in 1866. It transformed itself into a terrorist organization during Reconstruction to drive Black and White Republicans from political power in the southern states. The definition of the Ku Klux Klan is located in Chapter 13 on page 272. The Ku Klux Klan will correlate today in America where they currently active in 25 U.S. states. This means that the Ku Klux Klan chapters operate in half of the U.S. states spreading their message of hatred toward Black people. Later interviewed by a Charleston newspaper, Forrest boasted that the member count exceeded 40,000 men in Tennessee alone and over 550,000 in all the Southern states (The Charleston, 1868). Never achieving organization, local chapters continued to go about their business, settling things in a way they deemed fit, this, in turn, would be one of the reasons for the decline of the Klan.

The group defines religion similarly to as the true interpretation of Jesus Christ and his teachings. The group has had a lasting effect on American history as well as being known for their violent acts, but the group’s motives are less known. Founded in 1865 the Ku Klux Klan has been revived three different times throughout American history. During the first revival the klan focused mainly on putting a stop to social and racial change brought by the white women from the north. They used their hatred of the african americans to fuel their fight against the change in equality. In the 1920s the klan focused more on the immigration of foreigners and their influence on african americans. By changing christian music, burning crosses, and violent acts, the klan took on a more religious mentality. During the revival of 1946 klan members began using utilizing a vastly christian mentality that has lasted into current day. As time progressed the Ku Klux Klan movement has evolved from a social movement against change to a religious mentality based around Christianity. Their ideals, goals, and actions have changed from actions based solely on their mutual hatred of change to acts through which they claim as being Christian. Their motives have evolved from a hatred of all but white protestant christian to a justified religious reasoning for actions.

The organization assembled as a group to intimidate newly freed slaves in the south. They focused on their anger on the government that was supporting African American rights during the “Birth of the Nation.” The only race that was presented the opportunity to join the organization was WASPs, White Anglo-Saxon Protestants(“The KKK”). The group included mayors, judges, sheriffs, as well as criminals. They used outlandish titles, hooded costumes, and violent “night rides” in order to make the Klan more popular. The Klu Klux Klan will experience several cycles of growth and collapse, and sometimes these cycles will be more extreme than others(“Ku Klux Klan—Extremism in America-About the Ku Klux Klan”).

Did you know that in the 1920’s the klan had exceeded 4 million people nationwide. The klan had started in the South in 1866. The klan was born in Pulaski, Tennessee.It was started by a white man named General Nathan B. Forest. People joined this group either because they didn’t like the African Americans or they were anti- Catholic, anti- Semitic, anti- birth control, anti-immigrant, anti-Darwinism, and anti-Prohibition stances. The klan was an easy group to make but, when it got started it wasn’t a pretty sight.
