Knowing Your Audience The collapse of the Chilean Copper Mine was covered worldwide for several weeks. Over 30 workers were trapped in a mine for well over a month. The rescue teams and US advisory team had to be very cautious when speaking to the miners, families, and news reporters. These teams had to keep in mind the different roles of the people in the audience and how they would receive the message. They also had to keep in mind the potential needs of the families of the miners and how they receive a message concerning the incident. Finally they especially had to keep in mind the potential needs of the company’s employees when receiving a

The families will benefit from an informative message letting them know what has been done, what will be done, and how it will get done. This way the families understand what is going on and can feel like they are a part of the process. Informing the family will help them feel like they are not disregarded or unimportant which can give them a sense of calm. If the families of the miners are upset, then the miners will become upset which will cause complete chaos, and in a situation like this chaos is the last thing anyone needs. The companies’ employees are the main people affected by this incident so the message to them should be from someone responsible in the company such as an owner, ceo, president, or vice president. The employees need to know that this incident is the priority for the company and that they are involved. The message should cover the main points that are important to the employees and the organization. This message should let the employees know that they are not alone or forgotten. Making sure the employees understand that the company is involved will also insure the employees that are not trapped that they would not be of less value if they were trapped in a situation like this one. Employees need to know that they count in any situation and that their safety is of high regards to the company. Before any messages are delivered the speaker should make sure they are ready to cover all of the
We have come to a time where it is imperative to reset our courses associated with the safety of the employees, the safety of the brand and the longevity of the company alongside their competitive edge. As senior manager, consideration should not be limited to solely short-run solutions. It is primary for the company’s decision makers of all tiers manage the negative and positive potential of any crisis as time can carry the possibilities of unknown limits. Accommodations must be made for the entire community (Senior Management, Ergonomists, Labor Leaders, Politicians of the city, Service Staff, Human Resources and Line Management) under the company’s payroll that has been affected by this natural disaster using our revised Crisis Management Portfolio.

In a unfortunate event, San Esteban Mining Company need to tread carefully in how they would communicate to the world about the incident. If the company does not properly communicate what has happened, it would be viewed as careless, and heartless to the world, employees, and the families. San Esteban Mining Company needs to release information in three ways. First, the families would have priority concerning communicating to different parties involved in this incident. The needs to use the ethos and pathos elements when communicating to the families of the workers. The person(s) that will be updating the families needs to be competent and show empathy, honesty, and be trustworthy and compassionate.
To understand better the circumstances your co-workers are in we will provide you consistent update, and further discussions will take place via e-mail, emergency phone lines, and text message. Please understand that all of our efforts, and resources must be concentrated in the rescue efforts.
What would be the potential needs of the families of the miners in receiving a message about this incident?
The investigation will take time to enfold, so a statement must be issued without full knowledge of event. As seen with past oil crises, the story will receive an extensive amount of news coverage and will be a leading story for an extended period of time. It is important to understand that the explosion will create a number of victims, each who must be addressed separately and in a different manner. Even if the company is found to not be at fault for the explosion, the company’s name will forever be tied to the crisis. The company’s response to the crisis must be fast and effective but also project a sympathetic tone. However, as the Director of Communications, the job also entails protecting and improving the company’s credibility. The different type of vehicles used are face-to-face meetings, video/tele conferencing, e-mail, company website/social media, task force groups, hotlines, and the
Timely and accurate information is essential during a terrorist attack and a natural disaster. Therefore, the government must inform the public of all events. However, officials need to be mindful of the information that is released could expose intelligence in an ongoing investigation and put lives at risk. Crisis communication is a fine line of keeping the public informed and placing them harms
Getting a staff together to bring in useful information to plan for the release of the information to the news media is a great way to enhance communication to the public. The media will then get the information out to the public by ways of News releases, web sites, news conferences, newspapers and other social media (Hicks, 2012). The advantages of using these types of media are they quickly allows for the public to know what type of crisis has happened, and what kinds of precautions are being taken to ensure their safety. If there were to be any fatalities caused by the crisis event(s), these types of avenues also will give information on that. Some disadvantages can be unreliable technology of the citizens that will not allow for them to get access to the information that is being released by the media, such as no television, computer is not working properly, or they don’t received the local newspaper to be able to read it, etc.

As the Disaster Coordinator for the city I am responsible for ensuring the public safety and welfare of the citizens within the city's jurisdiction. This requires me to have a full understanding on my role and responsibilities for managing disaster response and employing resources in order to save lives, protect property, the environment. Additionally I’m tasked to preserve the less tangible but equally important social, economic and political structures. My first reaction was to alert the regional Joint Terrorism Task Force to prepare them for possible activation. Next it is vital to gain situational awareness and develop a Common Operating Picture (COP). This COP is the who, what, where, when and how as it relates to the incident. Situational awareness starts at the incident site and includes continuous monitoring of reporting channels to gain
In August 2010, the world focused on a small copper mine in northern Chile, when it was discovered that 33 trapped miners were still alive after the mining shaft collapsed. This tragedy captured audiences of every source of mainstream media around the world. The media reported updates on the conditions of the trapped miners daily until their rescue in October 2010. People were drawn to the families of the trapped miners. Because of the magnitude of this unnatural disaster, audiences worldwide were depending on the reporters to give them every detail possible, not to mention those connected to the disaster: family,
A key cause of this disaster was the lack of adequate communication between BP and Transocean. BP did not share critical information with its contractors, and contractors did not share critical information with BP. As a result, employees often made critical decisions without a full approval for the context in which they were being made. Decision making processes did not sufficiently ensure that personnel fully considered the risks created by time and money saving decisions. There is nothing wrong with choosing a less costly or less time consuming alternative as long as it is proven to be equally safe. The problem is that, at least in regard to BP’s team, there appears to have been no formal system for ensuring that alternative procedures were
Security is one of the fundamental pillars of any organization. As such, all threats to staff members must be taken seriously and dealt with in an expeditious manner that reduces the amount of potential danger facing them (Capozzoli, 2002). My initial reaction to a staff member being threatened would be to hold an individual meeting with him or her so I could ascertain the exact nature of the threat who issued it, via what means, and for what reason. After obtaining as much information as possible about the threat I would then call an organization-wide meeting (possibly by department, depending on the size of the organization) in which I would frankly tell employees about the aforementioned threat while respecting the privacy of the individual who encountered the threat. During that meeting I would also ensure the employees that the organization would be substantially beefing up security in the wake of the recent events, and provide them the details.
This report outlines the current crisis situation and provides a range of crisis communication strategies and methodologies that are suggested for use immediately.
